NEWPORT, Ark. - An arrest has been made in the Monday evening shooting death of a Newport police officer.
That officer has been identified as Lieutenant Patrick Weatherford, 41, of Newport.
In a search of Jackson County jail records, we found Tyler Calamese, 18, is being held on a Capital Murder charge. We believe he is the suspect in the case but that information has not yet been released by police.
Officials say Lt. Weatherford died at a Newport hospital a short time after he was shot in the Remmel Park area of town. He was a 15-year department veteran.
Late Monday night, a procession of law enforcement vehicles escorted the officer's body from Newport to the State Crime Lab in Little Rock.
On Tuesday morning, the Newport Police Chief announced a gunman was in custody. Details on the arrest of the suspect haven't yet been released.
Also on Tuesday morning, the Independence County Dive Team was called to Newport to assist in a search for the suspect's gun, which police say is believed to have been thrown into a lake in the Remmel Park area.
