SHERWOOD, Ark. - After a Sherwood woman lost her niece to a distracted driver in a school zone, she's standing behind Sherwood Police to combat speeding and distracted driving in the city.
Linda Lou Averitt lost her niece, Cameron, to a distracted driver in 2006. Averitt said Cameron was hit by a truck in a school crossing walk and died in front of the school.
Now, SPD is boosting patrols to make sure they are doing their part to keep students safe and drivers as well.
Sgt. Keith Wilson said patrols are at several intersections on Highway 107 watching throughout the morning and evening commute.
Averitt said driving slow and putting the cell phones away while driving will ensure another family doesn't have to put a loved one in a grave.
