110 dogs rescued after Greenbrier fire

After a fire in Greenbrier three days ago killed 40 dogs, 110 are now being taken care of by 5 different rescue groups.

The Faulkner County Humane Society says the owners of the dogs were hording them.
The goal now is to get them adopted.

Volunteers say the dogs are petrified and spooked after a fire killed 40 out of 150 animals horded by a couple in a mobile home that went up in flames Friday.

Some of the dogs are still in shock, and a little testy after their chaotic ordeal. Thanks to the volunteers from 5 different rescue agencies, 110 dogs are on the road to recovery and finding new homes. Shirley Jarman with the Faulkner County Humane Society says most of the dogs are small Chihuahuas in pretty good health. "Some of them had been spayed and neutered, but they're definitely scared and shaky. They did not want to be caught."

The Faulkner County Humane Society is taking care of 37 of the dogs. Jarman says some are being treated at the vet, and all of them will be vaccinated, feed, and kept warm. "Right now they're settling down. They will be quarantined for two weeks."

Jarman says the couple surrendered the dogs, so they will go up for adoption once they they're calmed down. "We've had multiple offers of rescues and fosters."

Volunteers say their compassion and care for these animals will be rewarded when the dogs find their new forever homes.

Faulkner County doesn't have an animal shelter so it relies on foster homes for animals in these types of situations. That's why volunteers say it's so important to spay and neuter your pets.

The Greenbrier Fire Department says it appears the fire began around a wood burning stove. No word yet if the couple will face any charges for the death of the 40 dogs.
