15-year-old shot after Riverfest

The mother of the 15-year-old boy shot in the ankle while leaving Riverfest Sunday night says her son is lucky to be alive.
LITTLE ROCK, AR - The mother of the 15-year-old boy shot in the ankle while leaving Riverfest Sunday night says her son is lucky to be alive.

Stephanie West says her son is healing now, but she can't rest until her son's shooter is caught.

It happened while West's son walked back to his car after the Nelly concert Sunday night. A group of people were fighting right on the west side of the Peabody Hotel. West says a man hit her son, and another man pulled out a gun and shot him.

West says two days later she still can't quite calm her nerves. "I was kind of in a shock, really. I didn't know what to feel. I was just numb."

West says her 15-year-old son left with friends to attend the Nelly concert at Riverfest Sunday night. Hours later her phone rang with news she still can't make sense of. "I still have questions and I'm looking for answers right now. I want to know what happened, what was the reason behind whoever did it, why they would do it, and hopefully they get caught so it won't happen again."

West says her son walked by a group of people fighting along President Clinton Avenue near the Peabody Hotel. Someone punched him, and he punched back. Then, someone pulled out a gun, aimed, and fired at his face. "He shot it twice and it jerked each time. My son took off running and ended up getting shot in the ankle."

West says it's a miracle her son is alive, and is grateful in two weeks his wound will be healed, but she knows this nightmare isn't over yet, and is asking for help. "It's not ok when you see a crime being committed to stand by and watch. You're not being a snitch for giving information. Even if you don't want to give your name, give information so whoever the person is doesn't commit the same crime again, because it could be your family next time."

West says the Peabody has surveillance video of the shooting and detectives are reviewing it. Her son got a good look at the shooter. That's why he doesn't want his name or face made public. He's afraid of retaliation. West did point out his shooter to police and emergency crews. He says the shooter stuck around watching and waiting afterwards. So far, no one has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
