Millions of dollars in benefits go unclaimed every year. Now, through a joint effort between the State of Arkansas and Arkansas Interfaith Conference, a new program called the Benefit Bank of Arkansas is making it easier for working families to get these benefits.

Kathy Parum is a single mother of three kids, including four-year-old Michelle. She also has a baby due in August. Right now, she and her kids live at Our House, a shelter for the working homeless.  Aside from living there, Kathy also works as a cook at the shelter's daycare. Even with a job, she says providing for her family on her own is tough.

"We're holding down jobs and we're trying to provide for our kids. I'm a single mother. This program helps," says Kathy.

Because Kathy's a single mother of three kids and one on the way, she qualifies for benefits including medical care, food stamps, hot lunches for her kids at school, help with her heating bills, and even housing assistance.

"I think it's awesome, the housing assistance. Everybody loves their own place to live," says Kathy.

With $280 million in benefits to dole out, the hard part is for people like Kathy to cut through the red tape and get her hands on the benefits. That's where this program comes into play. The Benefit Bank of Arkansas will actually help working families apply.

Governor Mike Beebe says right now $280 million is not helping Arkansans and this program will change that.

Kathy says she's thankful for being able to stay at Our House, but she has bigger plans for her family. Right now, she's in the process of applying at Pulaski Tech to go to culinary school.

The majority of the $280 million is federal funds but through the Benefit Bank of Arkansas these benefits will be made available to working families in Arkansas.

To apply for these benefits you can go to Our House, LaCasa Center, or the Arkansas Rice Depot.  You can also call the Benefit Bank of Arkansas at: 1-877-375-0790.

Some people are really trying to make something better for themselves. And just fall through the cracks. And yes, some people use the system. But when people in the USA need help, They should be able to get it. Stop sending all our money to other countries. Take care of our own first. Food, medical, utitlity ass. We have to many people here that are going hungry, not able to go to doctors. My situation is I'm a wife mother of a 4 yr. old. Husband works, pays child support for his other kids, and after child support is taken out of his check our daughter has to do without. And because of him making to much money BEFORE child support is took out, we dont qualify for anything. Why dont I work? Cause you cant trust daycares. All the abuse. My child didnt ask to be born. And it's the parents place to raise a child. Not a daycare. So dont dictate on how many kids someone should have, if our money stayed here in the US. Our taxes might not be so high. And we would be able to live.

why doesn't this lady use some of the benefit money and get her tubes tied? I'm tired of my tax money going to irresponsible women who insist on having baby after baby out of wedlock whom they cannot support. my gas bill was over $200, where's my help? I guess I can't have any because I'm college educated, married and only have one child. Use some of the money and get some birth control!

why doesn't this lady take some of this benefit money and get her tubes tied? I'm tired of my tax money supporting women who have all these babies out of wedlock. I am married and only have one child, yet when I tried to get some food stamps while in nursing school and not working I was, of course, denied. Now my paycheck misses about 300 bucks in taxes for people like this.

I'm a 55 year old woman who doesn't qualify for anything. Lost a good paying job with benefits when it closed down to move to Mexico. I think it's a shame to give so much benefits to someone who persists in having kids they can't support! I can't get help with anything!
