LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The Arkansas House of Representatives voted to override Governor Mike Beebe's veto of the bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy Wednesday afternoon.

As soon as Beebe issued his veto, HB1037 sponsor Andy Mayberry planned to gather the needed 51 votes to override.

"I just felt like it had a better chance of passing the sooner it ran," Mayberry says.

As soon the veto was read in the House Wednesday afternoon, Mayberry made the move and called for the vote.

"I did a lot of leg work, a lot of other people did a lot of leg work to make sure we had those votes there before we ran the bill because it's kind of a one time shot," Mayberry said.

A failure to override would have likely signaled the end of his 20-week abortion ban becoming law.

After receiving 80 votes just last week, Mayberry got 53, two more than he needed, but much tighter than he expected.

"If you would have asked me that yesterday I would have said 'no,'" Mayberry says. "Earlier today I started to get some warning signals it might be extremely close."

The Arkansas Senate is expected to vote on the veto override Thursday.

ChristinaP, let me ask you this. If there was no risk of your health or the baby's health, why would you want to abort your child? If it simply because it was an unplanned conception, then maybe you should have tried to have protected sex or not having sex at all. If you relationship is as happy and stable, then why would you want to kill the offspring of a happy and stable relationship?

You: Slightly obese middle age white male with pasty skin and thinning hair protesting outside the women's health clinic last Saturday Me: Short slightly nervous blonde that you called a baby killer as I walked inside (There were surely many that day, I was wearing the blue cardigan sweater with a white blouse) When you told me I was going to hell for murdering my unborn child you not only looked into my eyes, it was as if you were staring directly into my soul (unwashed and heathen as you would have me think it is). You shoved literature at me and out of fear I took it. When our hands brushed together lightly as you rammed your fist against my hand to deliver the by this point crumpled leaflet I felt an electric spark. While I'm in a monogamous relationship with my boyfriend of three years I have to say that he can't hold a candle to you. The way you called me a "whore" and a "baby killer" showed me that you are the kind of man I need. The kind of man that knows a woman's place is in the kitchen preparing tasty snacks to feed your (evidently unending) appetite. I can only imagine that when we had sex (missionary position and only for the express purpose of procreation of course) that it would be the most amazing 45 seconds of my life. I long for your touch, your rather juvenile sounding voice to tell me what a worthless piece of trash I am while in the same breath telling me god loves me. I am willing to leave my perfectly happy and stable relationship and devote myself full time to being your always subservient wife and mother of your children. If you don't want to move I am completely okay with living in your mother's basement. Call me maybe?

I wonder whose ultrasound they used to provide for this? Did they have the parents' permission? Wouldn't that violate the HEPA law if they just picked one out to provide for this article??
