Accused Killer of Former UCA Basketball Star was Victim's Stepson

Investigators say Moore shot McClain to death last month in Cordova, then went to his funeral.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Details are emerging about Dwayne Moore, the 19-year-old accused of killing his stepfather, former UCA basketball star Jimmy McClain.

Investigators say Moore shot McClain to death last month in Cordova, then went to his funeral.

Moore went in front of a judge in Division 13 to answer to aggravated burglary and theft of property charges from a separate incident, but now he also faces a first-degree murder charge.

"I was very shocked," says Heather Feemster, Moore's Ex-girlfriend.

Feemster has known Dwayne Moore for four years, and the two dated for five months.

"He was real sweet, loving, caring, always did the gentlemen thing," she says. "Opened the doors and did all that good stuff."

On Feb. 22, McClain was found with multiple gunshot wounds near the front entrance of his Cordova home.

"Multiple gunshots were fired inside the home, and he had been struck multiple times," says Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham.

Detectives say Moore shot McClain with a .40-caliber handgun.

"He never talked about him," Feemster says of McClain. "Detectives showed up, it was like, 'Who's Jimmy?' I never met him. Never knew his name."

Feemster says she was with Moore two days before McClain's body was discovered.

"He was acting pretty funny. It was nerve-wracking because I didn't know, that night something happened. It was very weird," she says. "He was like sorry and apologetic that he'll always be there."

According to Feemster, Moore called her around 10 p.m. Feb. 20 and asked her to come to his house.

"I walk in his room, I look on the dresser, and I see this big gauze packages and I see detox stuff," she says. "Something out of the ordinary I've never seen before, apparently because he wounded himself on his left side. We talked and acted like something bad was on his mind."

"He was favoring his right side. When he leaned to his left side, he kind of said, 'Ouch.' I was like, 'What's wrong?' He said, 'Don't ask questions.' I said, OK.' I didn't ask questions," Feemster says.

Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham isn't saying what he believes led Moore to kill McClain, and Moore isn't telling detectives either.

"He did not confess. He's not cooperating in any shape, form or fashion," Sheriff Oldham said.

Moore is in the Shelby County Jail on a $2 million bond.
