Apartment maintenance complaints

Debra Profit says she's been dealing with holes in the ceiling, mold growing on the walls, and water damaged carpet at her Fair Park Gardens apartment.

Profit says it's been nearly 6 months and the maintenance staff isn't fixing the problems. She says she's complained numerous times to the management, and says she can't just pick up and move because she doesn't have the money. That's why she hopes a visit from Code Enforcement will help push the apartment management to finally fix the problems with her unit.

Profit says it all started with the ceiling in the bathroom. "It's been leaking for 6 months and then water started coming in on the floor in my son's bedroom. The carpet had to be pulled up. Then I had a leak in my bedroom and finally pulled the carpet up off the floor. The maintenance guy came and put a hole in the wall."

Profit says the ceiling in the bathroom continues to leak, the floors in the bedrooms keep flooding, and she's constantly cleaning to keep mold from growing. She says something needs to be done. "It's ridiculous someone has to live like this."

Management of the Fair Park Gardens Apartments says the damage done to the apartment is the responsibility of the tenant. The management says Profit ruined the carpet and these problems just surfaced within the last 3 to 4 weeks, not 6 months ago like Profit says.

But Profit says she's not the only tenant having issues getting management to address maintenance problems. Management denies that saying its policy is to respond within 48 hours of a reported problem. Profit says she's tired of getting the run-a-round. "This is just unlivable."

Profit says Code Enforcement is scheduled to inspect her apartment Thursday morning at 10am. Several messages were left for people in the Code Enforcement office but no one has returned those calls yet.

Several other tenants from the apartment complex say they've never had any problems with the management or maintenance staff. Others confirm Profits complains, saying they can't get their maintenance issues fixed.
