Ark. Legislature Completes Teachers Insurance Special Session

In a rare midnight session, the Arkansas legislature completed a three day special session to insurance premiums for public school employees.
LITTLE ROCK, AR - In a rare midnight session, the Arkansas legislature completed a three day special session to address insurance premiums for public school employees.

The session in the House and Senate adjourned shortly after midnight after both houses passed duplicate pieces of legislation shoring up the both short and long term solvency of the public school employees health insurance plan.

The short-term solution will use $43 million in state surplus funds to head off scheduled 48% premium increases in 2014. The cash influx will keep the premium increases closer to 10%.

A handful of other legislation deals with long term solutions including creating a task force to look at changes to the insurance plan itself in 2015.
