LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas Department of Correction says a prison guard on horseback shot and wounded an inmate when the inmate charged at him with a blade he was using to cut grass.
Prisons spokeswoman Dina Tyler says the correction officer shot Joseph Henry just below his collarbone on Monday at a medium-security unit in northern Arkansas' Izard County. Henry was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Tyler says the 39-year-old Henry was one of 21 inmates who were using blades to cut grass by hand at the North Central Unit in Calico Rock. Tyler says Henry was shot after repeatedly charging at an officer and disobeying commands to stop.
She says no one else was hurt in the incident.
Henry was convicted of battery, terroristic threatening and rape.
