A Midland School District board member is on thin ice after reportedly posting anti-gay comments on his Facebook page.
A posting the magazine, The Advocate, says was written by Clint McCance shows comments the school board member makes condemning gay pride, saying the only way he would show support is if “they all committed suicide.”
Friends of McCance tell FOX16 he is staying with family and won’t comment until he hears from his lawyer, but parents we spoke with want answers now.
"I think there has to be some action to show this type of biased is not going to be accepted," said Roy Ford.
He has two daughters in Midland School District, and adds there’s no telling what students will believe is okay when a school board member sets that kind of example. He fears if McCance did post the message and isn't forced to resign, it will open the flood gates for more discrimination in the schools.
"It is bullying. They have policies in the school that eliminate bullying amongst kids and the same policy should go for teachers and the adults," said Ford, and he isn't alone.
The
Midland School District and the
Arkansas Department of Education have both released statements saying they don't condone the post. This comes just days after a statement was released by the U.S. Department of Education reminding schools of Title IX, including any schools found to allow discrimination can lose federal funding.
Parents like Ford say a resignation couldn't come soon enough.
"Not only for my two daughters-all the other kids have the right to have a safe and healthy learning environment," he said.
A protest is being held in Pleasant Plains on Thursday in support of a resignation for the board member.
