Attempted Salvation Army kettle thefts

Salvation Army volunteers are usually the ones doing the bell ringing. Tuesday in Conway though, the volunteers almost had their bells rung.

"I think it's about as bad a crime as you can commit," said David Owen who has donated money to the Salvation Army recently.

Fred Merker, another donor, said, "that's ridiculous to tell you the truth."

Salvation Army representatives told Conway police that at a JCPenney and at a Walmart, a car of four people pulled up, pointed a gun, and demanded the volunteers' kettles.

"Desperate, low," described Ofc. Sean Canady. "I mean you don't steal from charities."

Police don't have all of the Walmart incident details yet, but in the JCPenney hold-up, the bell ringer refused to give up his kettle and the would-be thieves sped away.

"If someone's pointing a gun at you, give them the material things," Canady said. "You can get it back, you can't get the life back so it's not worth the risk."

So far, no arrests have been made but people who've donated their money to the Salvation Army have some ideas on what to do with the crooks once police catch them.

"I'd like to see them go to prison for it to tell you the truth," explained Merker.

As for Owen, he has a slightly different idea, saying, "have them walk around with a sign that [reads] 'I stole from Salvation Army.'"

Right now, all police know about the four suspects is that two are male and two are female. As for the Salvation Army, they referred all questions to police.

I have another great idea for the Salvation Army. Contact the National Guard and the Governors Office and ask if our men and women in uniform can go out there in uniform with assault rifles slung across their back and then see if they get robbed.

when they don't say their race, let' just assume they are non-white suspects.

Why would Fox16 not include the suspects race or vehicle? It could help in apprehending them. Very strange. Either the journalists are incompetent or they have an agenda.

Log Cabin wrote --- According to officials, the driver of a red Chevrolet Camaro, a black male believed to be in his 20’s, pulled up to the bell ringer and offered a dollar for the Salvation Army’s kettle. Three other passengers in the car included another black male and two black females, also believed to be in their 20’s.

Dear Guzzler- how in the word can you manager to connect this to President Obama? You need to get out of the house more often, maybe travel some to see the real world. No doubt these thugs are worthless and belong in jail. And no doubt the majorty of crimes are commited by their ilk, this has nothing to do with Obama. These types did not simply show up in recent times, nothing new here.

@Guzzler - You're correct. Don't know why Fox is afraid to print the race of these criminals. If you want absolute confirmation of what you know is true, just check out the same story from the Conway newspaper. www.thecabin.net
