The man accused of hitting and killing a Conway police officer is reportedly a war veteran suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The suspects' attorney says his client is a celebrated war hero, one who was discharged from the military and is considered disabled for PTSD.

Barry Strickland is charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and driving under the influence of drugs. He has bonded out of jail.

Last month, prosecutors say Strickland crashed into Officer William McGary while the officer was working an accident scene in Conway.

McGary died the next day from his injuries and plenty has been said about the officer's dedication to his job and his ultimate sacrifice.

But now we know more about Strickland, whose attorney says he's been deployed multiple times.

He now works for a railroad company and was headed for home the night of the wreck. His attorney says he was only on the drugs he's prescribed by a doctor.

Strickland's attorney says It's unclear, though, whether he was taking the right dosage of those medications.

According to court documents, Strickland admitted to running off the road at least twice before hitting the officer.

itsmenotyou: you're, not your. Rest of ya; I've never seen combat. Don't know if PTSD is real or not. Have friends that say they have it from Nam. Have a father that fought on the front lines against the Chinese and NK's in the Korean War. Killed men in combat, saw friends and fellow soldiers killed in combat. Got some shrapnel in his head. He doesn't believe in PTSD either. I guess it's up to the individual; how well you handle doing your job in combat. Don't know myself, can only go by what others have told me, what I've seen written on here, what I've read about, and what I've seen on news programs. I stood in the Flag Line for Officer McGary; wish there was something I could do for the men and women that have served and came back with screwed up heads. There is a lesson to be learned here; and it's not about jumping on the "cop killer". We need to do whatever it takes to help our vets, regardless of what they are suffering from. Both families need our prayers, think of it in that context. itsjustme; hope to see you at the swap meet this Sat. I'll be at the ABBA booth from 0800 to 1200. All patches welcome!

I see you pay so close to my posts. When did I ever say I flew jets? Never. And when did I ever say I worked on computers? Never. Its not my fault I chose to do something with my life and become something, unlike others. Dont hate me because I have had a long successful life with many accomplishments.

Itsmenotyou, research DEVGRU and then tell me how much "office time" is involved. Just because you seek shelter and meals from the Salvation Army does not make your knowledge of the military any better. And FYI, I have not been everywhere and done everything, but I damn sure served my country during some of the most difficult conflicts.

Itsjustme we all know you have seen it all done it all and your F.o.S. If you really were in all those places in the Military you of all people should know some brothers handle things different than others. And if you were in the Military theres a big difference between being on the front lines than being in the office with the woman. As you must have been.

itsmenotyou, I beg to differ on your statement of "no one of you keyboard cowboys have walked in this mans shoes". I for one was in Vietnam in the 60's, I was in the mix with the Soviets, went to Brazil, Panama and a few other places that you probably have no clue where they are. I have been to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Istanbul, Iraq and other Middle East countries and nothing compared. I didnt come back all f'd up.

There are millions of people prescribed this medicine. They drive every day. Sad an officer is dead. All this does is puts some of us in a situation we don't need. Do we take our medicine and work with what the doctor tells us or leave them alone and drive. I also agree that this being a cop it drew lots of attention it wouldn't otherwise. I have a friend that drives a truck that takes the same thing. When he has to give his sample it's there. Why doesn't the DOT pull his license? Why are doctors not required to turn in the names of the people that they prescribe medicine to that could effect driving ability. As usual there could be lots of questions with no answers. What I don't understand is we sell ALCOHOL for human consumption with intent to catch a buzz but put the kibosh on legally prescribed medicine. Our standards are so far out there I don't think they could send a shuttle after them.

As I read the comments and read the headline "cop killer" like this man shot this officer or something more sinister. No one of you keyboard cowboys have walked in this mans shoes. Seen what this man has seen while defending your right to live free. Im sure when he woke up that morning and took his meds like millions do everyday he didnt set out to kill a cop. And if it wasnt a cop and was a homeless person or just your average joe. The headline and the comments would not be the same. You can bet on that!

it is sad sad situation... everyone has an opinion. mine is-i feel really terrible about officer MCgary.but,in a way,i feel bad for Mr.Strickland also.because he has to live with killing an innocent human being.BUT! truth is he decided to drive under the influience, knowing he wasnt capable.my question is WHEN HE SWERVED OFF THE ROAD- TWICE! WHY DIDNT HE JUST PULL OVER AND,TAKE A NAP?????? OR CALL SOMEONE TO COME DRIVE HIM HOME????????? now an innocent man-a man that chose to serve and, protect us s dead! THAT! MY FRIENDS-IS WHY WE DONT DRINK AND DRIVE! OR DO PRESCRIBED DRUGS OR ANY OTHER DRUGS,THAT IMPAIR OUR THINKING-AND THEN DRIVE!!!!!!!! so? yes,i think he should be punished, because he knew better. and,PTSD is no excuse to kill anyone.
