Body of Missing Texas Man Found in Buffalo River

In what could be yet another casualty of Friday's storms, the body of an Austin, Texas man was found near a campground at the Buffalo National River.
Pruitt, Arkansas – The body of 27 year old Stephen A. Carney of Austin, Texas was found just before 4pm Sunday afternoon about one mile downstream of the Erbie access on the Buffalo National River and near where he went missing Friday afternoon.

Carney was found by members of the Harrison Fire Department who were checking an area the Mennonite Disaster Service Search and Rescue boat personnel had indicated they had located a likely signature using side scanning sonar units.

Carney was last seen by friends around 2:00 P.M. on Friday, May 31st, 2013 when he dived into the river from a bluff near an area known as the Charcoal Fields. After entering the rising, muddying water, Carney did not resurface and the search was initiated. Severe weather, heavy rains, rising water and flood debris made the searching more hazardous and difficult and the mission was delayed while storms passed and the river returned to a safe level.

The operation was a joint effort between agencies including Newton County Search and Rescue, The National Park Service, Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Tri-County Search and Rescue, Mennonite Disaster Service Search and Rescue Team, Harrison Fire and Rescue and BUFFSAR.
