The point is that the word retarded is not synonymous with "stupid" or "disrespectful" (as a couple of other posters have mentioned the teacher probably meant.) As the authority figure in that class, he should have found another word. Like it or not, it is an offensive term. Isn't that obvious? To say that someone acting retarded is acting "stupid"? Offensive. My mentally challenged, or "retarded" uncle was far from stupid or disrespectful. He was a great man who was born with an unfortunate disability.

A Reserve Officer Training Course, for youths, in a high school setting is not ROTC at the college level or Basic Military Training nor is it an Officer Training School; it is military training set to further the youth’s education of the military to become a future officer and a leader. If a cadet is out of line he or she should be shown discipline by example of leadership that is appropriate to their age. Degrading a cadet because of his or her behavior by calling a cadet names does not give an instructor the right to bully a cadet because the instructor can’t handle the situation. That conduct should not be tolerated within a ROTC high school setting; the cadet should be disciplined by the instructor in an appropriate matter that would change the cadet’s behavior. Granted in this case the 15yr old was a challenged soul and was offended and is looking for attention, but the instructor was out of line with the name calling of a 15yr old boy, and he should apologize, and appropriate measures taken. He should have had the intellect to find another avenue of discipline that will form future leaders within our future military. When I took PME we learned when placed in a leadership position, there is a difference in talking down to a subordinate and talking to a subordinate. What I do question is how this 15yr old was accepted into a ROTC program with this disability?

I'm in JROTC with this kid as an upperclassmen and this cadet is very disrespectful in class and to other cadets. This whole thing is BS because the instructor did not call him a retard but to stop acting retarded as in stop acting disrespectful but o no the instructor has to apologize to the kid.He bullies other cadets but yet hes not the one getting in trouble!I dont think so,nothing like this will slide past mommabear! In my 3years of ROTC he has to be the worst cadet.

I don't care if this teacher is a vet or not. If the student was not behaving then the teacher should have sent him to the office. My childs Art teacher in 6th grade told my son "Well if you'd mind your mother at home you might be smart enough to remember to bring back your papers." During the meeting with the principle, teacher, myself and child the teacher lied about the remark. I had my son dismissed and I flat told her she was down right lying! The only way she even knew what was going on at our home was from a bunch of "Pothole" running IEP team members. They refused to take my chid out of art, but I sure let her know she had better never say another word to my child. During another year a different child of mine had a sub. This sub told a group of students that they "acted like a bunch of "B's." I went to the class the next day and the sub was there again, she asked did I need anything. I told her no i was just observing. I then went to the principle who assured me that she couldn't have meant anything by it because she was a Piano player in one of the local churches. Wow, really? Then what has happened to the band director who sexually touched a student, oh everyone said "Not Mr. Green!" Well beware Bryant there is a student who is interning near by and is going to be a Band director. This student went on private trips with Mr. Green, Mr. Green signed for this young mans housing at college...what another possible molester of students...oh and this is the young man who had the band director fired, and Mr. Green took his place. Bryant go ahead and let things like this happen...I think the administrators and school board needs to be responsible for such as this...besides they are hiring authority. Don't hold your breath foe an apology, I'd be surprised if he gets one.

I am in JROTC as an upperclassmen in the 11th grade. I have personally seen this kid bully other cadets and when told to stop by the instructors he would start yelling at them and saying "you are not the boss of me!" and then cuss them out. Not to mention I have heard this kid use the term "retard" talking about another cadet. He throws that word around like its nothing, but God forbid he gets called one he's gonna go tell mommy and daddy and they're gonna call the media to try to get an apology out of the instructor. I think this kid needs to apologize to the instructors and other cadets for being the most disrespectful cadet I have ever seen in my 3 years in ROTC

I go to school with him and as a witness, he is completely self aware of his actions and causes trouble on a daily basis and doesn't listen to authority. When the word "retarded" was used towards him it was not meant to point out a mental handicap it meant to mean stop being stupid (the word choice could have been different, I get that) because he was yet again causing problems and would not do as he was instructed.

As a witness. The kid is the worst cadet in the world. He's making stuff up and he got what he was asking for. He's just trying to get the teacher in trouble. Its a shame that the media tries to ruin peoples lives and takes the word of a delinquent instead of a veteran.

From what Ive read here, the instructor told a student to " stop acting retarded" and this student has a mentally challenged brother. The student who was told to stop acting retarded is not mentally challenged, his brother is, if I read this story right. Either way, it was something that should not have been said in school, ROTC class or not. ROTC is not the same as boot camp where drill instructors hammer you day in and day out, this is high school.
