MARIANNA, Ark. (AP) — A prosecutor says he doesn't expect the case of an inmate accused of stabbing a guard to death in an east Arkansas prison to go forward next week.

Latavious Johnson was slated to go to court Monday, but prosecutor Blake Spears says he expects the case to be continued.

Spears says he doesn't know when Johnson's court date would be rescheduled.

Prison officials say 30-year-old Johnson stabbed Barbara Ester in January while she was investigating whether he had a pair of unauthorized shoes in the prison.

Johnson faces a capital murder charge in Ester's death. Johnson was previously sentenced to life in prison for killing his father.

One of his attorneys, Joe Perry, didn't immediately return a phone message left Friday.

Okay, I worked in a prison 4 a while. Even w/o that experience, common sense should have told the guard NOT to be going into a cell ALONE w/ a convicted murderer w/ NOTHING to lose. Especially considering how he wasn't even restrained before she entered the cell. Now, I understand that our correctional system is short on ppl willing to work in that environment, but she should NOT have been ordered, or permitted to attempt to toss this inmates cell alone. She should have had him back up to the door, get cuffed, THEN enter the cell while another officer held the inmate outside the cell. Now, because of all of this negligence, & refusal to follow orders on cell entrance & inmate handling, another officer is DEAD. I hope the family sues & wins. Experience speaks 4 itself. The whole thing is disgusting.
