When you think about football, you think of the bone jarring hits and the suspenseful long runs.

But what about the field?

Today - my job was to take care of it.

I met the Head Coach at CAC High School, Tommy Shoemaker - who gave me more details about the job.

"How long does it take usually to paint a whole field like this for a game?"

"Two to two and an half hours, but it can be as long as four if the rig breaks down,” Tommy said. “So it takes a while"

"So you're telling me you need a little extra help?"

"I'm going to put you to work. If you're going to come out here, you have to work."

The coach wasn't kidding. Before I knew it, we were getting ready to work on the hash marks to insure they would be straight - we first laid out a long string across the football field.

Once the coach approves, I crank up the paint machine called the "Lazer" and followed him while he painted the mustang grass.

After a while, I volunteered to try it out.

Easy, but time consuming.

The only downside to the work? Getting paint on you.

As an added bonus - Coach Shoemaker let me pick up the grass clippings with a John Deere.

"How did I do?"

"You did good. You did a good job. I think I'll let you come by and work with us a little bit."
