Community Reaction to Nuclear Plant Accident

For those who live near the Arkansas Nuclear One plant, the industrial accident is shaking up the community.
RUSSELLVILLE- For those who live near the Arkansas Nuclear One plant, the industrial accident is shaking up the community.

Many people who live nearby are concerned about what happened. Daniel Millsaps says he's sad for the employees and their families, and he's scared for his own that the plant might be dangerous. "It's terrible. It's sad. I don't know what to think."

News of the accident is spreading quickly. John Aksamit says he's shocked and can't believe someone lost their life, and 3 other injured employees were rushed to the hospital. Entergy representatives says their injuries are not critical, but it hits too close to home for Aksamit. "Life is short."

Arkansas Nuclear One Site VP Jeremy Browning says there is no danger to the public and the plant is stable. "This is an industrial accident that occurred in our generator side, not the nuclear side of the plant."

But Millsaps is still concerned. "It's scary. You never know when that thing is going to go off, or when you're going to have to evacuate."

Aksamit says it makes him feel uneasy. "No matter how much safety you have in place, accidents can happen."

Browning wants to reassure people this is an unusual event, and they are working with the families to help them get through this. "It's all about the people. That's the most important thing for us, is making sure the families needs are met."

While there are still many details of the accident unknown, Millsaps say he can't help think about those who are hurting. "Hopefully they were taking safety procedures. It's just a shame a guy had to die."

Browning says safety is always the number one priority. "Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends."

Investigators are looking into the details of the accident trying to make sure measures are in place to prevent another accident like this from ever happening again.
