PINE BLUFF, AR -- The jury decided in favor of Chaderious Avery, the teenager involved in that attack and court chief of staff Roderick Shelby will have to pay him $6,003. However, no punitive damages against Shelby.

After deliberating nearly five hours, the jury says Shelby acted out of line for his actions in a fight with Avery. Witnesses say Shelby grabbed Avery by the throat, bashed his head into the wall, and punched him.

"This right here shouldn't happen to any other child," said Avery's mother Karen Walls.

Although she asked for significantly more than the jury awarded, Walls said she's pleased they placed blame upon Shelby for excessive force.

Shelby's attorney says his client acted in self defense. He felt threatened by Avery's words and rage.

Walls hopes this case brings about change.

"I hope they will protect the kids more down there in juvenile and I had a lesson learned from my child being down there for my own experience," Walls said.

The federal judge dismissed Jefferson County sheriff Gerald Robinson in this case, saying Shelby was not acting as a deputy at the time of the attack.

Indeed; he did write a lot of great songs. Ya'll are bringing back good memories and making me feel old! A tape, fridge full of beer, a baggie of green, and good friends; you can't beat it!

It is sad the young man was locked up. My good old mother told me many a year ago two wrongs never make a right. I want the boy prosecuted for what he did and this nut to pay for the assault. Sounds like criminal activity by both. We do not forgive criminal activity just because one happens to work for the system.

Evil? Nope. Not perfect by any means; only Jesus can claim that one. Not particularly one to mess with either though. I can only take so much; then the "old" me kicks in, along with my training and experience. Don't get even, get one up! I'll pray for you me, how's that for evil?

opinionated; My younger brother and I look exactly like our father. He was in the military, so we were not around other family when we were conceived. Sorry, but you are wrong. Look up peer in the dictionary. A jury of his peers certainly would not be my peers. Him and I are in different social classes, age, education, etc. Name doesn't bother me; I must admit I get a laugh out of some of them though. And I'm sure you'll get an "update" on him in a few years, if not sooner! me; Don't have a rocker. I do pray for many that suffer hardship. I prayed for the black woman and her children that died in a fire here in Jax, did you? I prayed for the young black woman that was killed after giving the garbage the till, and one came back in the store and shot her to death. Did you? Helping out to feed the homeless; about half and half on race. So what? Do you go down there and help them? Don't wave at the one black family on our street anymore; gave up after I figured out they were not going to wave back. Guess they are "afraid" of people that ride a Harley; who knows? I was just trying to be neighborly and friendly. Nothing more, nothing less. By the way me; the "man" that killed the young mother; if he "turns his life around", you think that will do her children any good? And where did I wish bad on a child? I was just sayin', it would be my guess this isn't the last we've heard of him. Sad? Nope. Very happy and content with my life. The land, home, and vehicles are paid for; belong to 4 different motorcycle organizations or associations; enjoy riding my Harley year round; and have hundreds of friends; black, hispanic, and white. And I get 2 checks a month; I earned both of them; one by putting into SS since I was 15 ( I worked after school and on weekends, no thug work for me! ), and the other I earned by serving our country in the military. And Jesus is my Lord and Savior! What's there to be sad about?

Only mistake Shelby made was doing this in front of a camera. Was he out of character by doing this? I cant answer that because the video really does not show 100% of the story. If the kid provoked Shelby, then an ass whipping was in order. If Shelby just beat the kid for no reason, then yes, he should pay for it somehow. Will the kid turn his life around? Thats entirely up to him. Hopefully he will, there are to many youths tossing their lives away for nothing.

Legally Mr. Shelby was out of order for his behavior, but personally I think he did the right thing. Many of our youth & adults now days lack respect and decency for one another. I wish the best for this kid as well, but sadly I think ArkansasYankee is likely right and this kid will likey be in the news again for committing a worse crime b/c he's not really learning anything it seems from his current incarceration. What he will take from this experience is that I can behave irradicly and legally no one can touch me. Sad but true.
