LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A congressional hopeful said Monday he's dropping out of the race for a northwest Arkansas seat amid questions about his military record.

Democrat Ken Aden announced he plans to withdraw from the race against Republican incumbent Steve Womack after the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported military records and statements from officials contradict Aden's claim that he was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier.

"Unfortunately, the ongoing saga related to my military records has created a tremendous distraction for our campaign, and I did not want this to have adverse consequences for Democrats across the district or anywhere else in the state," Aden said in a statement.

Aden said he intends to withdraw from the race effective 5 p.m. Monday.

Democratic Party spokeswoman Candace Martin said Aden's choice means there won't be a Democrat to challenge Womack in the fall. But she said that the party respects his decision.

"As we said from the beginning, it was unfortunate that the service he did make with our country by serving in active combat was overshadowed by the fact that he misspoke about his military service," Martin said.

The Democrat-Gazette reported last month that a review of Aden's military records showed he never completed the qualification course to become an Army Special Forces soldier.

The newspaper obtained the records through a Freedom of Information request.

"Unfortunately, the ongoing saga related to my military records has created a tremendous distraction for our campaign, and I did not want this to have adverse consequences for Democrats across the district or anywhere else in the state," Aden said in a statement Monday.

Aden went on to say he was exiting the race for personal reasons as well.

"Additionally, as most of you know, I recently became a father for the first time, and I will be exiting this race in order to spend more time with my family," Aden said.

"I sincerely regret any difficulty that this situation has caused my fellow Democrats, my supporters, and staff. I will continue to remain a loyal Democrat and to my best to help Democrats in win in November."

Leatherneck; as a son of a career soldier, and having been a soldier myself, and a current and active member of the Patriot Guard Riders - thank you for your service to our country; but, I just have to ask; why 14 years? You were 6 years from a monthly check for life. To those that know how things work in the military, and to those that either grew up in it, or made a career out of it, geting out just a few years shy of retirement checks for life sounds a little off. Of course it's none of my business; but thought I'd ask anyway. And again, thank you for your service to our country. Oh, and by the way, I like talking about what I did in the Army; had a wonderful time at Night Vision Lab in Alexandria, VA. TDY's to Aberdeen, and Camp A.P. Hill, and one to where my wife's father and my father were stationed - Ft. Huachuca, AZ. No, I have no combat experiences to glorify and talk about, just the history in and around DC and VA that I was able to visit while in the Army, the good friends I had in the service, and the enjoyment of working on technology to help our soldiers in the war, and in future wars.

He didn't stand a chance against Rep. Steve Womack anyway.

Before you jump on me, I served in the Marines for 14 years, I am in no way condoning what he did, but on the other side of the spectrum, there have been court cases where people said they have received certain medals, put it on their resumes and Judges did nothing about it. Called it free speech. Real service men and women don't talk about what they did. Only what we can do.

There are 20 million plus veterans in this country. Most of us do not care for those that glorify their records with lies. Good bye Mr. Aden, don't let the door hit you in the rear end. US Army, Sep '71 to Sep '74. I served Honorably, did not go to Nam though, and I don't make up lies to glorify my military service. I served Honorably as mentioned, and am proud of that; it's enough that I was there if needed. One last thing; I hope this always follows you around Mr. Aden; you have dishonored yourself, your family, and your service.
