One doctor's dream could end up saving many people's lives. Saturday people received free screenings for everything from diabetes and high cholesterol to prostate and breast cancer. And with the high cost of health care, events like the Health and Wellness Expo at Philander Smith College may be the only way some people find out about life-threatening illnesses.

Hundreds of people packed into the gym at Philander Smith College getting measured and weighed as part of free sports physicals and tested for a laundry list of conditions and illnesses. Dr. Derek Lewis said, "if you're very rich or very poor you don't have a problem. If you're in the middle you've got a problem."

Dr. Lewis says he wanted to have a mega-health event for people in the community who can't afford it and don't get government help. This is a pilot expo and it literally covers you from head to toe. Dr. Lewis said, "when we put this thing together we started at the head, that why we have determatologists... all the way to the toe, that's why we have podiatrists here."

And it covers everything in between too. State Representative Fred Allen, (D) Little Rock, found out he had prostate cancer through a church event similar to this. The free screening, usually $75 at a clinic, showed his PSA levels were too high. So he went to the doctor.

"I had a biopsy done and the biopsy revealed I had cancer," Allen told us.

And he says the early diagnosis saved his life. At this year's health expo Dr. Lewis wanted to place an emphasis on obesity since it can lead to so many other ailments. Lewis said, "if we can get people to lose weight we can help with heart attacks, diabetes, strokes. We can help with all those things."

Dr. Lewis says if the event helped diagnose just one person's disease all the work has been worth it. Next year Dr. Lewis hopes to showcase the newest procedures and medical technology of the future. You can find out more about his Derek Lewis Foundation by clicking the link next to this story.

This is a wonderful thing to do as a member of the Health Care Team. Each person of the Health Care take a pledge or oath to never turn away someone in need. Well I can tell you that it does happen. I have known of someone in my life that a nurse, the office manager tried turning down someone very special to me until I made a scene in the office because they had been seeing him for months when he had insurance and then didnot want to when he no longer had it. Well they did see him that day and I realized the Dr. did not meet the criteria with me. I am a nurse and I do feel very bad and sorry for those people that have no one to help them out in the Drs. office or etc. Please people, love your family members enough to go with them to their appointments to keep the info straight that they may not remember in days to come. The Drs., some may not do up to par and only you with your knowledge will know. The older person expects Drs. to be up to par and are sometimes so grateful for the Drs. help they don't think anything but the best and cannot remember what the Dr. says. There are some wonderful Drs. out there and there are some that just want to make the almighty buck and are not up to par. I have seen that all so often especially these last 8 yrs. of my life. My best wishes and prayers go out to this Dr. and other Drs. and Others, that give of their time and money to help others in need. We should all do something to help others in need. There are others, many others. They may not have had their home blowed away, or other disasterous things but alot of people need help. Ask around or better yet look around and I am sure you will see who they are. We never know for sure that it won't be someone we love and we would want someone to help them. It is going to take Drs., Lawyers, CPA's, Preachers, Nurses, Mothers, Fathers, Sisters and Brothers, Rich and Poor, and just anyone to reach out and help. Donot depend on the Government always.

So what happens to these people who can't afford a doctor if they have something bad wrong with them? Once it is diagnosed, then treatment is necessary. Is the treatment free also?

This is absolutely wonderful more doctors should step up to the plate and follow this wonderful example of human compassion. However, I never hear about events like this until AFTER they are over. I would like to see some pre-event articles to inform people of the oppurtunity. HATS OFF TO YOU DR. LEWIS, YOU ARE A WONDERFUL PERSON
