Experts Say Homeowners Should Consider Flood Insurance

The deadly storms over the last several days have many people placing a renewed emphasis on flood insurance.
LITTLE ROCK, AR -- The deadly storms over the last several days have many people placing a renewed emphasis on flood insurance.

If you live in a flood plain and have a mortgage, you're required to carry flood insurance, but if you live outside that zone, the decision can be a bit more complicated.

Damage to your home from rising waters is not covered in your homeowner's policy, so insurance experts say the recent storms indicate that flood insurance is something every homeowner should consider.

"Unless you live on a hilltop and you have immediate drainage, it's really a good idea to think about the possibility of just spending that $150-200 and adding flood protection," says State Farm's Gary Stephenson.

Flood insurance is a federal program, with prices set by the government, but the policies themselves are sold through private insurance carriers.
