A Vilonia man, his wife and mother are accused of stealing money from a school. Vilonia police arrested the family Friday night at a high school football game. Investigators believe the family stole money from the school for quite some time.
Police made the arrest at the Vilonia High football field. Chief Brad McNew says he suspected the family was stealing from the school and when his officers showed up, he says they found proof.
Rick Huey, his wife Rebecca Huey and his mother Ruth Huey spent a little family time together in jail.
"We know they have taken money on several occasions,” McNew said.
He got word from Vilonia High's former athletic director several months ago that the Huey family may have been stealing big bucks from the athletic program.
"People were trusting them and the school trusted them to handle their money and thought they were good citizens volunteering their time for this many years. To find out they're stealing from them is a big blow,” McNew said.
Officers showed up to arrest the family Friday night aright at the gate where the Hueys collect money from school supporters showing up to a football game. That’s when officers found a total of $3500 in their pockets.
Rick Huey works with band students at the high school. His mother is an aid at the elementary school.
"I’m terribly disgusted and disappointed that someone would take funds from the district and from the young people. It's pretty sickening," Vilonia High principal Ed Sellers said.
Rick Huey is charged with 10 felony counts of theft of property and is being held on a $150,000 bond. His wife Rebecca is charged with three counts of theft of property and got out of jail on a $45,000 bond. Rick Huey’s mother Ruth is charged with one count of theft of property. She was released from jail on a $15,000 bond.
"You’re talking possible prison time. They're pretty serious charges,” McNew added.
