"I have no idea why I'm burying my son," Anna Watson said through tears.

Jerry McGee, 26, was an inmate in the Arkansas Department of Correction's Tucker Unit in Jefferson County. On Sunday, he was pronounced dead at Jefferson Regional Hospital after he stopped breathing Sunday morning.

"The chaplain called, and I told him it wasn't my baby, because Jerry was healthy," Watson said.

According to the Department of Correction (ADC), protocol was followed. McGee had been seen by the infirmary and was later transported when his condition worsened.

"From all indications this appears to be a natural death," said Shea Wilson, spokesperson for ADC. "We are very sorry for this family's loss, and we know it must be difficult for them to not have answers. But we can't give them those answers of what happened, because we don't know."

"You know, 26-year-old men don't just start having breathing problems and die," Watson said, shaking her head. "It just doesn't happen."

Watson had hoped an autopsy would offer more answers.

"The guy who did the autopsy said he couldn't find anything wrong with him," Watson said. "There was no medical explanation. He didn't have an aneurism, blood clots, ulcer, bruises. Nothing."

Watson says McGee's cellmates claim he complained of being sick for several days before his death, but was denied medical treatment. But ADC says that simply isn't the case.

"There's no indication of prolonged illness to alert us he was very sick and needed immediate medical care," Wilson said. "He was incarcerated on drug charges, we have no way of knowing if that may have compounded or deteriorated his medical health or impacted him in some way. His medical records show that he, like most other inmates, visited the infirmary throughout his time here for minor aches and pains, but there's nothing to indicate a major medical condition."

McGee was just weeks away from being paroled, and in a January visit, Watson saw him excited about a day that will never come.

"I have to bury him and I can't tell his babies why they can't see their daddy," she said. "He was ready to be out and to take care of his babies. I just need answers."

At this point, a toxicology report, which could take 90 or more days to process, may be their last chance for answers.

Watson had expressed concern that ADC wouldn't release McGee's prison medical records to her. ADC said they are prohibited by federal law from releasing that information.

People that commit much horrific crimes are sentenced lesser time. Yes he committed a crime but his time was served. He deserved the chance to watch his daughters grow now he will never be capable of doing that. Those girls never knew of crimes commited, they knew that was their daddy and they loved him dearly. It's pretty sad when a drug charge has to pay the price of death.

Her last name is WASSON. Jerry was beat to death, yet they say he died of natural causes! It's hard to believe. Yes, he made mistakes, but don't we all? He got caught up on drug charges, he wasn't high at the time he went to prison. It was a possession charge! HE wasn't a bad person! Jerry did have a past but that makes him no less of a person. He had a family. Two beautiful daughters. Please ppl, if you have nothing pleasant to say, keep your negative comments to your self!

My father is locked up at Varner unit. He has a life term. He has been denied medical time after time. Yes I agree if you do the crime do the time but these inmates deserve to be taken care of while they serve out their sentences. I have a number of some advacates that might be able to help you Ms. MCGee. Her name is Stacy Hill 901-216-0449...she is with the arkansas organizing for justice group. Well is a mother in mourning. Ur rude and crude comments for what this man has done. He went to prison to pay for what he has done and make it a clean slate with the world. No one is perfect in this world there is only one person that is perfect that's God himself. Everybody makes mistakes and then u learn from them. In the Bible your not suppose to judge people for what they done everyone has their judgement day. The day is between them and God. The reason the world is like it is, because people like you that can't forgive people for what they have done in life, everyone can change you just have to have the want to. Let me guess ur one of those people that never does anything wrong and thinks their perfect. Let me tell you something your not perfect you sin like the rest of us everyday because no matter how hard we try we can't be perfect we still sin, that's why Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. OUR not just mine and his OURS. So it looks like some people needs to take a good long look in the mirror theirselves. S.S.Dale. Rest in Peace Cous!

You regulars know how I feel about methbilly's and thugs. Lock 'em up and throw away the key. But put yourself in her shoes - if I had a relative in the joint, and they passed away at a young age, I'd want answers too! The family at least deserves that much. I found out I could get my mom's medical records from when she passed away in a KS hospital; why can't this woman get her son's records? Sounds fishy to me. I hope the family finds the truth, and get the answers they deserve.
