SALINE COUNTY, AR – Firefighters are the courageous heroes we depend on to keep us safe but right now the Benton Fire Chief has a fire of his own to put out.

"Do not judge us by this," said Chief Bill Ford. "Please, don't judge us by this."

Timothy Bodkin, a 15-year veteran with the Benton Fire Department, is charged with 1,000 counts of child pornography.

"He's a good man," said Chief Ford. "Tim was a good fellow. Good hearted. Great hearted and it hurts us all."

When asked if his opinion of Bodkin has changed since learning of his charges, Ford responded, "As a person, Tim's my friend. I don't understand this. I can't understand it."

Investigators searched Bodkin's apartment, Friday, while he was out of town. They say they found more than 1,000 pictures of child pornography on his computer. Sheriff's deputies arrested Bodkin later that day at a North Little Rock bus station as he arrived back into the area.

Young children live on both sides of Bodkin's now broken-in door. 12-year-old Desmond Nash and his mother live right across the street.

"It's sad to know that someone in such a prominent position would even do anything like that," said neighbor Lavette Nash. "It makes you wonder and look at your neighbors a little bit more closely."

"It's a lot bigger problem than what people in this country realize," said Lt. Mike Frost with the Saline County Sheriff's Department.

"We'll take it a step at a time," said Chief Ford. "We've got to take this one step at a time."

Investigators are currently doing a forensic examination of Bodkin's computer as they try to track and trace where the pictures came from and who the victims are. They say more charges could still come.

Sin12; I have a degree in computers, with Honors; yes, anyone can put anything on someone else's computer. I suppose there is a small chance, I presume a very small chance, that he may have been set up; but usually this is not the case. blackandproud; I am not in any way defending this man; if he is guilty, then give him the full treatment. golfdude2; as usual, you are right on the mark; if he is guilty, then put him in a cell with toe sucker; maybe they can find some common ground. And we used to call firefighters Tot Finders; I guess it appears this firefighter was a differnt kind of Tot Finder! Remember guys and gals; this is still America; innocent until proven guilty; would any of you have it any other way?

No I am not defending this horrendous behavior. However, what one does on one’s own computer is no one else’s business now if these picture were pictures this man personally taken, Hang him for the act he did personally to the kids. To me, The authorities have declared war on this form of media, no other type of media can the authorities arrest you for what you looked at or read, Period.

To me this is like the Salem witch trials. The guy could have a 1000 magazines with child pornography, no legal problem. But down load a picture and go to jail. Now to my understanding you can look on the internet all you want just not down load the picture. (Under age Pictures that is). Don’t get me wrong I do think its sick for this type of behavior. This to me is like putting someone in jail for what book they read and where is the warrant for search. Sure the computer might be in the open view but not the content.

@AWAKE I agree with you to a point. But this guy had the pictures. Now can they prove he is the only one to use the computer.

I'm surprised that the Saline County Sheriff Dept. responded to the call. You call, they ask do you want a deputy to call you or come out? Last week there were three in seperate vehicles in the same area. One going east on Salem Road and turned left on Samples. One going west on Salem at the same time. He stopped at the parking lot at the end of Congo and Salem to talk to another one that was sitting there. All the while, the man in the Chrysler Crossfire in the Harvest Foods parking lot was getting a beer from the cooler in the back and none of them did anything. I followed a woman one night, had central dispatch and Benton dispatch on the line for 30 minutes and they still couldn't respond. Was telling them exactly where we were the entire time. They even said they had someone at the next exit on the way. I finally stopped when she pulled over in Benton. I told them she was downtown now, close to them. By the time I got back to the end of Congo and Salem, there set a deputy. I ask if he was receiving the communication, He said yeah I looked for you but couldn't find you. WOW. Yes I am running for Sheriff in 2014. Seems there needs to be a change in Saline County.
