LITTLE ROCK, AR-- Gay Arkansans are preparing for a legal showdown. Next week, the Supreme court will hear arguments on two cases involving the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8.
Both cases define marriage as one man and one woman.
In 2008, Little Rock couple Ted Holder and Joe van den Heuvel got married in California. Their marriage license is only recognized in states that allow same sex marriage, but they would like that to change.
"We've seen things happening around the country that we never thought would have happen and yet it is happening with great speed too. So I think it's just a matter of time," said Holder.
The two plan to closely monitor next week's oral arguments.
"We're cautiously optimistic about what the Supreme Court will do and what the future will be," said van den Heuvel.
They say pop culture, like NBC's New Normal, is having a positive affect on the gay rights movement.
"When we grew up there was nothing on TV about being gay, unless it was something very negative. And so all of these TV shows and movies that incorporate gay characters, I think is great," said van den Heuvel.
Both say their relationship is a happy marriage.
"I think for children today that's great they realize they are gay, that they don't have to live in fear and hide and be ashamed," said van den Heuvel.
Those against gay rights say marriage should be between one man and one woman and it should stay that way.
