GOULD, AR – Gould Mayor Earnest Nash was attacked Thursday evening. Nash tells FOX16 he was pistol whipped, and the incident was the culmination of months of harassment against him and his family.

The tensions go back to January, when the new members of the Gould city council took office. Recently, those tensions gained national attention when the city council passed an ordinance banning all public and private meetings discussing any city matters within the city limits.

The unconstitutional ordinance was aimed at the Gould Citizens Advisory Council. On Tuesday, the Advisory Council filed a lawsuit against council members Harry Hall and Rosieanna Smith, challenging their eligibility to serve on the city council--Hall for his criminal record in Jefferson County, and Smith because she allegedly does not live in the Ward she represents.

Later that day Mayor Nash was attacked. Nash tells FOX16 that the attack was perpetrated by a Gould citizen who supports council members who Nash frequently clashes with. Nash had to go the hospital in Dumas to be treated for his injuries.

FOX16 talked to one council member who says he witnessed the altercation, Harry Hall. He says although he was there, he wasn’t involved. Hall says he saw the mayor talking with council members Sonya Farley and Rosieanna Smith in a silver car when a citizen joined in on the heated discussion. Hall says Nash and the man began yelling at one another, and then things got “physical.”

Sitting in his blood-soaked Razorbacks shirt, with stitches in his right temple, Nash described the attack in a live interview on FOX16. Despite the attack, the mayor does not plan to do anything different.

“I’m not leaving, I’m not going anywhere, I’m going to stay the mayor whether they like it or not. They’re not going to run me off,” said Nash.

During the interview, Councilwoman Sonya Farley drove up and confronted Nash. During the argument, Farley had to be restrained and taken away from Nash. As Farley was being taken away, Nash said the car she drove up in was also present during his attack.

No arrests have been made in Nash’s assault. He says State Police is handling the investigation. Nash says he plans to press charges against all involved in the attack as soon as possible.

Well,if he claims to be a so call preacher an the Mayor, then he still would have approached the situation better. Instead he provoked what happened to him. Sometimes people get in positions thinking they can do what they want to do because of the title they hold. I think the Mayor is messy, unfit, lier, and ignorant as well. He sound like he engages in a whole lot of mess, because not only did he approach that car,he also kept commenting on people status that talked negative against him. So, he obviously don't know how to keep his mouth shut when he need to. He needs to be voted out as well.

If I were in the Mayor's place I think I would have went back to that car too in light of all the previous incidents with these [council members?] Obviously he knew who it was and had real reason for concern. Report it all to the police first? The way things are starting to appear I don't know if that would have made any difference anyway. Impeach this city council and put in citizens who live in the city of Gould to work with this Mayor who obviously had the nerve to say no to them. All the good citizen's of Gould will then be able to get back to business for their city. Do that with the money you get from suing the people who caused your nice city down through the mud. They are despicable and sadly being portrayed as representitive of the rest of your citizens. I pray this comes quickly to an end so Gould can get back to a place that people would want to live in. Had these council members acted with some sense of responsibility and decorum none of this wuld have happened. I hope this has not done irrepairible damage to you all. The racial connotations made by some of these posters shows their ignorance as much as the council members have.

The issue I am most concerned about is the city ordinance limiting free speech and freedom of assembly guarantted by our First Amendment. I don't think Americans anywhere are going to tolerate this kind of Civil Rights violation. I know that I will not. I think that certain council members have a vendetta going against the mayor over a lawsuit his advisory council filed against a couple of city council members who may not be qualified to hold their office. Small town politics at its worst. The council members who attacked the mayor should be removed from office.

@KoSla-7:38a.m. - Please understand, I am not saying the Mayor has an unclean past record. Not by any means, am I inferring anything of that nature! When you look at past newspaper accounts, newscast videos, Videos of council meetings & public court records (including Federal Court), any individual has a right to read & review these items & to form an opinion. That is all I am saying. I have formed my opinion. I am not trying to force my opinion on anyone. I am not insinuating that the Mayor has something in his record to prevent him from holding office, or that he should not be serving because of the records. Let each individual form his or her own opinion. Now the issue of me having questions & no facts. I assume your still talking about the building? I have checked at the Lincoln County Circuit Clerk's office for many months to see if a deed has been filed & recorded. To my knowledge, and this was approximately two weeks ago, no deed was filed or recorded at that time. The lease agreement? Minutes reflecting the acceptance of the building by a vote of the council? It is a fact that people have put in FOI requests & have not received copies of the information. If you know of an individual who has a copy of these documents, please ask them if they will let me have a copy. I guess the next step will be to file an FOI request with the State Division of Legislative Audit. Gasoline is very costly, maybe they will let me make the request by using a fax machine. We must all keep the faith.

It sounds like the Mayor started the whole problem. First of all, if your wife and child were being followed, why didn't they just call the police first. Instead she called her husband the so call Mayor. Also, why would her husband (the Mayor) go an approach this car that she claims followed her to the gas station. I'm sure he was upset when he approached the vehicle and once a person is upset they usually approach situations the wrong way. He had no business going to the vehicle, instead he should've just called the police. However, he took matters in his own hand. Furthermore, how could you say someone is following you to a gas station, when there is only one gas station in Gould,AR. They could've just ended up at the same place at the same time. I think the Mayor is not telling the truth to begin with. The Mayor should be removed from office as well. This situation was very ludicrous.

@blknsassy79, the only statement you made that I agree with is that everything that happened wasn't called for. You stated that "if this man confronted someone for whatever reason it was then any person with common sense is going to respond." However, in your analysis you don't seem to factor in all the information that was given. The reports stated that the mayor responded to calls from his wife and child that they were being followed. To use your words...any person with common sense...is going to attempt to protect their family. This is true for myself, you, the president, and even the mayor of Gould. What is absolutely unjustifiable is the violence that occurred during this incident. He doesn't have to tell the media who the person was who hit him...he told the police. Which is what he was supposed to do. You can proclaim to file charges all you want but if the police of the town aren't making any arrests then you can't exactly grab a pair of handcuffs and do it yourself. So maybe your concerns about charges, arrests, etc. would be more appropriately directed at the fine police officers of your town. The actions of the people in power in Gould do not define black people. There are plenty of organizations/entities run by black people that do not have these kinds of problems. Maybe everyone needs to take a step back from self and personal bias and qualms and remember why they are all in positions of authority in the first place...to serve the citizens. You can't protect the citizens of a town when it's Mayor can't be protected from violence. You can't serve the citizens of a town when you are only making decisions to serve yourself and your own personal desires, & you surely can't reach an agreement regarding anything that may be beneficial to a town when you're too busy hashing out personal problems w/ each other to listen 2 the citizens. I think everyone in a position of power in Gould needs 2 take a step back & ask themselves r they serving the citizens or self

Witnessing this behavior from another state as I am, I know which place I'm not ever going to visit. The behavior is atrocious. Every single one of these people should be out of office. I would not want any of them representing my community. Look at them! Looks like a bunch of sloppy Walmart shoppers I can find on any Saturday morning, screaming and bullying other people, fighting and acting like fools. I think you are all a bunch of nuts. I guess Arkansas hasn't come very far in the last few decades. Pistol whipping a Mayor? Confronting people during a live broadcast? Wow. Pigs... all of you.

Everything that happened was'nt called for.The only thing the town is doing is showing the world is how ignorant they are.Everyone involved including the mayor should step down from thier positions.Just because you hold a title no matter what that title is does'nt meant you're a saint that do no wrong. If this man confronted someone for whatever reason it was then any person with common sense is going to respond and some will even retaliate.By him being a mayor and so called christian he outstepped his boundaries along with everyone else that was involved. Some things in life especially ignorance you have to learn to look over. There is a time and place for everything and that night should'nt have been one of them. How can you walk around the town as mayor when you act worser than the citizens.U suppose to be showing an example to the town and others. No one will respect you for such acts of ignorance.Until this man grows up and conduct himself as a professional person no one would respect him. There are too sides to every story. One cannot point the finger at the other. What I dont understand is that only one person hit this man with whatever it was they used.He knows exactly who hit him and I wonder why this persone name was'nt mentioned. All they keep saying is people jumped on him after the meeting.Something does'nt add up with this story.Anytime u get whooped by someone u know who they are.I'm pretty sure he saw it coming. Then another thing that bothers me is if he proclaim to file charges then why not just do that and stop entertaining ignorance for example on here responding to whatever comment you dont like or agree with. This is an opinion forum where the world could speak on.The only thing this is doing is adding more fuel to to the fire that has already gotten out of order.Everyone should have been taken off board immediately and the mayor should have been let go after this. This is what happens when you have "our" kind in any office and y we cant get positions now.
