Even though the White Hall School District is closing Redfield Middle School at the end of the school year, a group trying to save the building has high hopes of using it as a community center or charter school.

After a recent inspection, the group discovered what they call rotten, moldy, and deplorable conditions. Redfield Middle School is 75 years old, but the group says the problems they found with the building stem from years of neglect  and shoddy repair work. Linda Banks says unless hundreds of thousands of dollars in renovations are made, the building will have to be demolished.

Banks and several others in the Redfield community cherish the school and would like to repurpose the building. "We're not going to give up. We want to continue to have programs and a place where our children can have sports and things like that."

But Todd Dobbins say none of that can happen with a flooded cellar, leaking roof, no hot water in the bathrooms, and mold and asbestos problems. "This is not what I call maintained. It's deplorable."

Banks says the White Hall School District spent millions of dollars on other schools using taxpayer dollars she feels should have been used for repairs at Redfield. "We just feel like a stepchild. We feel like our children are treated with less value."

Superintendent Larry Smith says the decision to close Redfield Middle School is all about money, and the cost to keep up the building is too much. But Dobbins says it's going to cost the district money to tear the building down and conditions never should have gotten this bad. "This community has always been the red-headed stepchild."

Dobbins is upset to see a facility the community cares for so much neglected and destroyed. "They've had the purse strings, and they've not done a good job. In fact, they've done a horrid job."

Superintendent Smith says the building has been maintained and is in good shape for a facility that's 75 years old. He says a lot of the problems with the building simply cannot be fixed.

Starting next school year, Redfield students will be bused 20 minutes away to White Hall Middle School.

Many historical schools and public buildings are still in use, built very well as is this 1939 WPA School.Central High was built in 1927,still a public school. This building had a new roof last year that leaked from day one. No effort was made to demand the contractor make good on his work. This is a very solid brick school and if water had been kept out there would have been no mold and rotted wood. The disrict is supposed to have an asbestos check every 6 months if asbestos is know to be present,a Fedral Law. No check has been made since 2006. Everytime the disrict wanted a millage increase, they appeared in Redfield and asked for votes and promsed new classrooms on this campus. After each millage hike, they magically ran out of money on the White Hall end and Redfield would have to wait. Well we have waited since 1950. All repairs have been cobble jobs. The irony of it all is that the White Bluff Power Plant in Redfield made White Hall one of the wealthiest, if not the wealthiest in the State. They stil depend on WBPP for revenue but refuse to spend tax dollars in Redfield, a growing community. Just 2 years ago $500,000 spent for a girls sofball field in WH.$100,000 spent annually on security in WH. Not a dime spent in Redfield, yet this money was portioned out to every child in the district, including Redfield. At the end of 3 years the school purchsed police car is given to the city of White Hall, naturally as two WHSB member are also on the WH City Council. We have one guarenteed vote on a aboard of 7. We have no voice and no power. We tried to make do with what we had. We still have no power and the State Department of Education,Dr Tom Kimbrell and aids, are aware of all of this and remain silent. We were charged a $1000 more for text books for about 150 children than WH was charged for over 600 children. We have begged the State to audit and they refuse. The list of discrepancies go on;it seems White Hall is immune to investigation or accountability by the State

The fact is that it will cost too much money to repair a building that is this old. Even if the district had upkept it properly, it is still a 75 year old building. Why sink hundreds of thousands of dollars into a 75 year old building when there is a brand new facility more than capable of housing the current student population. I cannot believe that the people of Redfield would actually consider sinking the kind of money into a building that is that old. That is appalling to me. Why would I want my child to attend a charter school in a building where a cellar is flooded and apparently has ongoin mold problems? I agree i has not been upkept like it should have and Redfield has always gotten the "leftovers" from White Hall, but at this point in time, we cannot change the past. We can only move forward and the best scenario for all involved is for the school to be torn down. It is unsuitable for ANY use.

I am appalled at the school districts lack of attention regarding the upkeep of this building. Do schools not have to be inspected to stay in operation? These repair issues should have been addressed LONG ago. Sounds like they put a bandaid on a lot of things instead of acutally repairing them. If the building is in such bad shape, why isn't it being closed immediately? It's all about the all might dollar instead of our kids!
