Heart Medicine Recall

Congestive heart failure patients should be looking at their medicine. The makers of Digitek say some pills may have twice the potency as labeled.
Congestive heart failure patients should be looking at their medicine. The makers of Digitek say some pills may have twice the potency as labeled.  Actavis pharmaceutical has started a recall of Digitek.

"It scared the heck out of me," said Penny Bowmaster.

Bowmaster lives with congestive heart failure everyday and the medicine to manage it in her case Digitek.

"Because these pills were made over several months there is no telling how long," said Bowmaster.

The makers of Digitek are recalling the drug because it has the potential of holding twice the amount of active ingredient than prescribed. Now Bowmaster is waiting on her doctor for what to do next.

"I haven't talked to him yet, I've just been able to leave messages. But I'll persist until they let me know what to do."

Many pharmacies are notifying patients of the recall. Andy Blansett says to look at the medicine you're taking. "If there's a change in tablet shape, color, anything different, always call the pharmacy first and let them know because there could be a problem."

As in any drug recall, replacing that drug is important. As far as cost goes, this is one of the most highly prescribed drugs but it is also one of the least expensive.

Even with low cost, Bowmaster feels drug makers have to be more careful. “It's been such a struggle to get back to where I am healthier than where I had been, then suddenly find because of someone's carelessness I could have some more problems." So could potentially millions of others using Digitek.

Some of the side effects of a double-dose of Digitek heart medicine:
  • dizziness
  • vomiting
  • cardiac instability
  • blurred vision
