QUITMAN, AR – A homeowner says her home near a natural gas well exploded and she is questioning the cause of the fire.

Homeowner Kimberly Glenn was in her kitchen with a friend and an infant Monday morning when her friend smelled smoke. Glenn says that her entire house was engulfed in flames within seconds afterward.

"[The smoke] was coming out of the light switch in the living room and [the friend] went over to open the front door and by that time the house was engulfed," says Glenn.

The Quitman Volunteer Fire Department responded, but was unable to save the house. Glenn, her friend, and the infant had to escape out of the back bedroom window. The firefighters said that the fire was caused by electrical problems and spread so quickly due to the wind. But there are other theories on how the fire spread so quickly.

Ron Hake used to live near the Glenn residence. One December, he noticed air coming up through one of the rear wells on his property. Hake called Southwestern Energy to test the water in the well, and found that natural gas was seeping into it.

"It’s very probable there's natural gas in a lot of these water wells," says Hake. He estimates the distance between his old house (the one which had been tested with natural gas in it) and the Glenn residence to be “less than a football field away.”

“All the gas . . . you never know. There could be a big pocket under our house. Or there was, we don't know. The gas company won't tell us anything," says Glenn. "I don't know what happened. We've never had any electrical problems in the house. It was just so fast. We went from house with everything to nothing."

All she remembers is hearing a few loud pops as she watched her home burn to the ground. "I got everybody out so that's all that matters."

The owner of the natural gas wells, Southwestern Energy, has yet to respond to Fox 16’s calls for comment on the incident.

Another deceiving headline from Fox. Home Explodes, yet the homeowner only heard a few loud pops! Had this been an actual "explosion", I don't think she would have been around to tell the story of escaping this horrific scene in one piece!

I was not thinking it was (acutally)natural gas, in the water well...causing the fire...but..my first thought was more of seeping migrating methane possibly built up being Caused by the natural gas well ..(possible leaky casings)..migrating under the house...causing the fire....kind of like this story..... http://theadvocate.com/home/4074852-125/gas-trapped-near-sinkhole

If NG was present and contributed to the fire it would still be burning until someone turned off the source. I've worked in the oil & gas field 30 years and it would have taken a very large leak with the wind. It would have taken more than i fire hose to put it out.

I don't collect a check from the gas company, I don't own mineral rights or am I a property owner where there's a well. Ironman I like your way of thinking! I remember as a kid in elementary school firemen coming in and telling us about fire and what causes fire and about back drafts. Your right if was NG causing the fire it would of burned the field in between and whatever else stood in the way. We have a lot of geological, super rocket scientist in Arkansas that copy and paste their info from websites that like to gossip and spread rumors and not look for the actual truth. They are followers and not leaders. There's still no proof from what "the people" are investigating. They can't take the truth from their fire chief. If the "people" want to diagnose problems go out and get your degree and join the geological teams, and become your next fire chief.

I fully believe there is NG in water wells. It has been a natural occurrence in the area north of Wooster,AR area for over 25 years. What I don't know is, 1) is the house on a slab or crawl space, 2) is there an unused water well next to the house? 3) was there an existing crack in slab (if on one). Like I stated before, NG by its self could not start the fire. Something had to light it, if it was present. 4) If the well 300 feet away was a contributing factor, and producing enough NG to cause the fire in the wind we had that day, it should have flamed all the way back to the source. Is all the fracing in the area causing problems? Absolutely! Do I believe that re-injection of used frac water is increasing the intensity of the quakes in the area? Absolutely! I do believe the house was suddenly consumed in fire? Yes. Some people call it a backdraft.

Anyone that has deluded themselves into believing that it's coincidence, that a freak electrical fire destroyed a house 300' from a leaking well... There's not much we can say to you. This has gotten all too commonplace. Rampant wildfires in Conway, Faulkner and Van Buren counties, earthquakes, fouled water-wells... you need PROOF, you say? You need a reality check.

If NG is in one water well in the area its likely to be in all of them. The gas industry has no proof that this is unrelated to their operations, merely saying it's not their fault doesn't make it so although I'm sure if you depend on them for a paycheck you'd be apt to believe it. There are numerous cases of this happening in Arkansas and around the country. In every instance, its not their fault despite being the only drilling interests in the areas affected. Of course AOGC backs them up, 5 of the 9 AOGC board members currently own production gas companies so what else would you expect other than a cover up and a refusal to find the truth. This will get swept under the rug until the next time it happens and when they actually kill an entire family we might get an actual investigation.

I just don't buy natural gas as a cause or even a contributing factor. Not saying it couldn't happen, just don't believe it is very probable. based solely on the information given in the story, I would be looking at the electrical in the area of where the saw the smoke coming from and check to see if I could locate the wires and try and trace them back. Maybe a circuit breaker failed and over-heated a wire?

Pure speculation. Eye witness, just a news story. Who's old abandoned well is it? Not SWN's Any clue ? If no one will claim it someone has to help fix the problem. So, it's been abandoned since 1992 for 19 years not plugged, ok this old unplugged water well probably has been polluting the area for sometime. Abandoned water wells are very dangerous. There are huge fines for the water well owner for abandoning a well. Just an assumption but the casing on the water well could of failed in the last 19 years and there are natural methane deposits. Who drilled the water well, was it a reputable company who done it? Your right you do need an answer to your legitimate question, but with all the flack that any of the gas companies are getting from folks, would you want to talk to someone that's jumping to conclusions to make a news story? Ask the Oil and gas commission to answer your questions they regulate the gas industry. Are you a fireman? Ask them what led to the conclusion of the electrical fire.. There are several scenarios that could point the fingers to. My point is once again get ligit proof from a ligit source. The media is out for a story, stories cause havoc
