Hot Springs Village man guilty in neighbor's death

A Hot Springs Village man has been convicted of second-degree murder in the beating death of his neighbor.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — A Hot Springs Village man has been convicted of second-degree murder in the beating death of his neighbor.

A Garland County jury in Hot Springs deliberated just more than three hours Tuesday and Wednesday before convicting 42-year-old Jonathan Hersh Berks of killing 68-year-old Wallace Taylor. The Sentinel-Record reports that the jury also convicted Berks of aggravated residential burglary.

He was sentenced to 60 years in prison.

Taylor died April 16, 2010, after being found unconscious on the floor of his home. A deputy state medical examiner testified that Taylor died of multiple blunt force traumas to the head, face and body.

Defense attorney Wendy Howerton argued that Taylor could have fallen and injured his head — then continued falling after becoming disoriented by the first injury.
