LITTLE ROCK, AR - Little Rock police now say a dispute over gambling may have been the trigger for the murder of an Arkansas Baptist College student. Derek Olivier was shot and killed Thursday while changing a car tire.

Little Rock detectives back out at Arkansas Baptist College on Monday tracking down new information into the murder of Derek Olivier, 19, an Arkansas Baptist student and football player.

Sergeant Cassandra Davis with LRPD now says it appears Olivier wasn't even the target of the attack, the intended victim may have been another person helping him change the flat tire.

"We received some information that there was some type of gambling,” Davis says. “We don't know that the individual that was killed was involved in that."

Olivier died at UAMS minutes after being shot.

The shooting at 16th and Bishop, right across the street from campus, has sparked safety concerns from students.

"We're paying our money to be safe. Some of our students come here from out of town," student Angelique Edwards says.

But police say they don't believe the campus was specifically targeted.

"It may just the fact of where it happened and that the young man was a student, does not necessarily mean Arkansas Baptist had anything to do with it or that the school is an unsafe school," Davis says.

Davis says not enough information has been developed to identify a suspect yet.

Arkansas Baptist College says it has plans for a memorial vigil for Derek Olivier next week. The location for that vigil has not been determined.

I am totally amazed that the detective working this case know nothing about this article or its contents. Am I safe to assume that the detective maybe incompetent or just out right cares nothing about a young promising life being cut short.

It really does not matter if the school is in the ghetto or not. Hell a young man lost his life and that has left the family in greif and sorrow. So instead of talking about the location of the college how about you all send up prays for this young man family and friends. Thanks and have a blessed day!!!!!!!!!

B S, Arkansas Baptist is an unsafe school. Even in the daylight. And by the way, 16th and Bishop is part of the campus.
