Monday night, the Little Rock Board of Directors voted to buy 150 new in-car camera systems for the LRPD.

A 2010 Justice Assistance Grant will pay for the first 25 cameras covering the $157,000 price tag. The cameras will help officers fight crime and keep you safe.

The LRPD will equip its new squad cars with high definition cameras. They will offer a clearer picture than the old cameras in the old cars.

“One of the other things that excited us about the new cameras is the range between the camera and the body mic and the car. In the past, we’ve had some problems with the mic going out or there being some sort of interference between the camera and the body mic or the ability to record,” says Little Rock Police Sgt. Cassandra Davis.

The majority of the old cars already have cameras, and Sgt. Davis tells FOX16 that they usually start recording when the blue lights come on or the officer opens the door. Having the video allows officers to get feedback from their supervisors.

“We can look at the pursuit and see what was done right and what was done wrong, as far as what we need to change. If we have a problem with a suit or a complaint, we can always refer to the video to see, to support any allegations that an individual might have against the officer,” explains Davis.

The City will buy the rest of the cameras as soon as it has the money.

Sgt. Davis tells FOX16 that officers will need some training, but it won’t be extensive. They just need to know how to turn the cameras on and off and how to record.

I was a Police Officer in Kansas in the Mid 1990's and our video cams always activated when the emergency lights where activated. You could also use it as a video recorder with a zoom when conducting surveillance. I loved the things! Came in handy during court!

Will they record all the times they use the car for personal use? Like I mentioned in another article. Car 963 on the roof, in the Kroger parking lot in Benton over the weekend shopping in civilian attire. Or the one that shops with his female at Harps on Salem and highway 5? So just what do they record. I am telling you right now, if I get elected Sheriff of Saline County in 2014 no one will take a car home unless they own it. Moonlighting will stop too. Get ready, because it will be here before you know it. They can all get mad and walk out? Guess What? Have you seen the unemployment rate? I'll hire all veterans. They never have gotten to take a car home at taxpayers expense or work a second job and use a patrol car at the taxpayers expense. Seems to me if these have to be turned on it will be at the officers discretion. I guess that way when they pick up a "DATE" they can turn them off.

Why is it now the officers have to be trained on the new cameras. They should operate the same way as the old cameras. So what make any of us think the officers will turn the cameras on??? It seems as though they have a choice..

They just conveniently lose anything they don't want used or have a convenient camera malfunction.

The public sure needs them. What with all the crooked cop reports in the news anyway. I didn't wait for cameras in the cars. I bought my own voice recorder smaller than a pack of smokes. I have a camera system on my mind right know. Looked at some for as low as 15 hundred. I can always tell how it is going to go as soon as the run my info. If he smiles it will be OK. If he frees up his gun I know it will be bad. I never could figure out why it comes back approach with caution. I want everyone to know what happened if things go wrong. Sometimes it is hard to be polite and compliant with a butt hole. There is a place to post this kind of thing where you can get public feedback.

Can't get new cars, but they sure can have a camera so the officer won't cuss nobody. Maybe they need to look at hiring new officers.

Great idea. All Police cars should have in-car cameras. Now Pulaski County Sheriff need to step up and be accountable and install cameras.
