A Little Rock Police officer is under criminal investigation tonight.  Internal Affairs wants to know if a surveillance video obtained by FOX16 News shows Officer Bennie Dandy, 28, attempting to steal a computer.

If you drive by the Stroman’s furniture and appliance store at 9700 I-30 in Little Rock, you can see the glass on the front doors shattered, a sign of an aggressive burglar.  But Stroman's general manager Sean Funderburg says the real crime happened when Little Rock Police showed up.

"I come down to have a burglary investigated by LRPD and in the meantime I'm getting burglarized by LRPD," Funderburg says.

Funderburg found the doors of his business kicked in early this morning.  Two officers were already on the scene.

A sophisticated surveillance system captured it all.  You see the crook walking out with a hard drive and a monitor.  After doing an inventory check, it was determined nothing else was stolen.  But as the officers left, Funderburg noticed a laptop computer out of place, became suspicious and went back and looked at the footage again.  It shows Officer Dandy with a laptop in his hand.

"And he is on his way out, except, see him bounce off the door," Funderburg said as FOX16 News watched the surveillance with him.

Then the video shows Dandy walking around and then setting the laptop down in another room where Funderburg found it.

"There would definitely be no reason for him to try and leave the building with a laptop in his hand, a boxed up brand new laptop," Funderburg says.

Little Rock Police agree.

"It's very disappointing to see an officer that may be doing something wrong, it's very disappointing," Lt. Terry Hastings says.

LRPD holding off on final punishment until its investigation is over, but Funderburg says officers who saw the video today are disgusted.

"A couple of them were even candid enough to say this is pretty bad, that we have an officer on video doing something like this," Funderburg says.

The laptop in question is back where it belongs but police took the cardboard box it was cased in as evidence.

Goins says: "You have no doubt in your mind that this officer was trying to steal from you guys?  Sean Funderburg says: "Oh, I have absolutely no doubt.  If this door had been unlocked he would have left this building and I would have never known where that laptop went.  There's no way this man should be an LRPD officer or a police officer anywhere."

Officer Dandy could not be reached for comment.  A number listed under his name was disconnected.  Dandy joined the force in April 2007 and had no prior disciplinary action on his record.

LRPD says the internal affairs investigation could take one to two weeks.

There is always another side to EVERY story. The media is only going to put out the "juicy" information given to them. If someone was to see that tape with no outside influence, meaning noone makes a comment about it, what does it really look like he is doing...Nothing! That tape only shows a man walking with a box one way and then coming back the other way. Without the store managers stupid assumption that he was trying to steal the laptop this story would not even be a story.

choncha: that's what I'm saying. This guy tries to walk out a locked door and discovers he can't get out with out some one letting him, so he relizes that he isn't going to get away with it, and decides to return the lap top. I am glad his fellow officer turned him in or he would probably try to pull this kind of crap again somewhere else. No telling how many victims he has hit with the same intent! I'M JUST SAYIN'

Treating the laptop like evidence ? Yeah, ok ! With NO gloves and NO evidence bag ? And isn't it protocal for them to not enter the business or residence without backup ? I hope that if his intention was not to secure the laptop, he gets banned from future law enforcement career opportunities.

What I seen on the video was a police officer trying to walk out the door with a lap top. The door appeared to be locked from the inside, so he turned around apparently changed his mind after encountering the locked door. I didn't see the lap top in a plastic bag or gloves on the officer, so to say he was probably trying to collect evidence is a hard one for me to believe. He has been on the police force for two years. How many other burgliries has he been too? If he has done this before (and I have to believe he has) then the ones that was victimized turned it into their insurance and never heard any thing else about it. Internal Affairs should really check this out.

There is probably more to the story and I'm sure we can still trust police officers today.

Not all police officers do stupid thing like this. Police Officers have a hard enough time dealing with issues between their home life and work. Police Officers do not make alot of money despite what everyone thinks. Granted this is very sad what this officer did not only to the busines, but to the community. It doesn't mean that all officers make the wrong decisions like this. Ofc. Dandy might have been doing his job by picking up evidence, or he might have been trying to take it. He had the chance to take it but he didn't. Everyone should realize this.

Maybe he thought the computer had been touched by the burglar and was treating it like evidence and was trying to secure it. Who knows. He comes out of the area where the burglar went...maybe he was going to fingerprint the box. :-)
