LITTLE ROCK, AR-- Armed guards could be on the way to Little Rock schools. Thursday night, school board members discussed the possibility of giving guards weapons.

The issue surfaced after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut that killed 20 children.

"Typically, what you find is people who want to do harm look for the least resistance and if they know there is a potential for resistance, it may curtail the thought process of them choosing our school," said Mabelvale Elementary School Principal Darian Smith.

Right now, LRSD employs 119 unarmed guards and 18 with weapons.

If the proposal passes, guards will be required to undergo weapons training. The board discussed the issue for about an hour and a half.

"We want to say people are watching us every single day. If you don't believe, just last night one of our elementary custodians was robbed while trying to empty the trash at the dumpster," said Associate Superintendent Sadie Mitchell.

No decision will be made right now. But the chief security officer sent a strong message to the board.

"I am convinced that if a mentally ill individual is inside a school with a firearm, the only way to stop that individual is to have someone in that school with a firearm to stop him," said security director Bobby Jones.

Leaders also discussed the possibility of installing magnetic doors and panic buttons.

This all goes back to my comments on gun control. If we had a government that actually gave a rats ass about the innocent law abiding people and victims of violent crimes and stop babying the criminals and being more concerned about their rights than the innocent and the victims rights, things would be different. You will never stop all of the nut jobs from going apeshat and killing a bunch of people, nor will you ever curb violent crime 100%, but if you treat a criminal like a criminal and make crime punishable, things would not be as bad.

We have a lot of schools in this Country and in this State that have Police Officers assigned to the schools. They are referred to as Resource Officers. They are armed. Now, I have seen reports where some have may have improperly tazed a child but have never read where one went on a killing spree. We live in a society where the mentally ill are free to roam our streets and we also live in a State that has the right and obligation to protect our children and I believe it requires we put qualified armed guards in our schools and it's past time we get it done.

I agree with the other Its Just Me (love the name by the way, lol). These armed security guards need to be trained in not only the use of the weapon, but when to use the weapon.

I have no problem with armed guards in middle & high school, but i need these people who are suppose to be protecting our children to be well trained in their usage of these weapons.Trained in the area of knowing how to assessed the situation before using there weapon.I have seen first hands in the Little Rock middle & high school how their security guards are lacking and abusing their position,so lets make sure they are trained properly before innocent people are harmed.

Reading the news in the last few years I could go for this. Lots of bad things are happening around schools lately.

This could also curtail a lot of other violence as well. Good move LRSD.
