Little Rock could take building owners to court

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Tuesday night, the Little Rock Board of Directors decided a neighborhood eyesore needs to get cleaned up.

"This building would not exist in the west part of Little Rock in the condition it has been in for the last three years. And, that's what's offensive to me and the people in that community," says City Director Erma Hendrix.

Hendrix wants the abandoned Job Corps building near Interstate 30 and 21st Street cleaned up. The company that bought it in 2009 has yet to turn it into apartments.

The city now wants the owners of the building to bring everything up to code, and that'll mean getting rid of the messy weeds, branches and trees surrounding it.

Tuesday, Mayor Mark Stodola threatened legal action against the owners. So, if it comes down to demolishing the building, it won't come at the expense of the taxpayers.

"One of the things Mr. Carpenter's looking at is whether or not through some sort of condemnation ordinance, we can try and get them in court to get the court to get them to expend money to tear this down," says Stodola.

The city now wants to know if the company really plans on renovating the building, because it hasn't seen any plans.
