Little Rock pastor resigns amid sex charges

A Little Rock pastor steps down after police say he had inappropriate contact with a 15-year-old boy. Members of The River Church, which recently ran "bar church" this past Easter Sunday, say they're saddened by the news. Police are investigating 42-year-old Shane Montgomery.

The pastor made headlines earlier this year when he held church services at a Little Rock bar. Now, he faces charges more controversial than that concept.

"We choose to listen to the people that Jesus called us to reach," Montgomery said in a pre-Easter interview with FOX16 News.

The former pastor of The River Church is facing felony assault charges. A 16-year-old boy told investigators the former pastor sexually assaulted him when he was 15 years-old. Some of the details are too graphic to repeat.

According to police, Montgomery admits to oral sex and fondling the teenager, but denies any other allegations.

"The touching and oral, that's just as bad as going the whole way in my opinion," said Cynthia Bonds. "A 15 year old is still a child."

Many of the people we shared the news with were at a loss for words.

"Not only that it happened, but that he admitted that it happened,” Paula Butler said in shock.

Friday, The River Church issued a statement saying its members are remorseful for the situation and want to help the victim's family in the "healing process."

"That's where you’re supposed to be safe, with a pastor," Fannie Lester said.

We visited Montgomery's home for comment. No one answered the door.

"In his position, think of all the people that he let down,” said David Gruber.

Staff at The River Church say they are prepared to offer professional counseling to the victim and his family as they get through this situation. Montgomery resigned from his role as pastor Friday.

According to police, Montgomery and the teenager met online before meeting in person this past summer. Police arrested Montgomery on Thursday. He's charged with fourth degree sexual assault, which is a felony. Montgomery bonded out of the Pulaski County jail Thursday night on a $2,500 bond.

Statement from River Church

The River Church and her leadership is shocked and saddened by the news of this event involving our former church planting pastor who has resigned effective today

We want to express our deep concern to the teenager and his family and are prepared to provide outside, professional counseling to this family as they cope.

We intend to fully cooperate with the investigation by the police as it proceeds.

Again, we express our deep sense of remorse for the situation and our commitment to assist in the help and healing process that is needed.

We have nothing more to add to this statement at this time.

Shane, I too hope that you read this!!! I am praying for you and your family. I used to work along side you with the youth group. You helped me through some very difficult times with your prayers and thoughts. You basically helped me walk away from a very abusive & ungodly relationship that I was in with a young man. May God keep you in His sights during such a difficult time and may He comfort you as only He can. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God - we all are guilty!! Let He who is without sin cast the first stone....Shane, God is right there with you!!From your sister in Christ

hoppersii, no evil remark intended. Just the way things are here in the south, but getting better and so sorry you chose the Baptist religion. Pedophiles cannot be cured, just check websites. They should be castrated and locked up forever!

arkany that was an evil remark about Baptist as I am one and we do not all think alike as I was for the lottery. Some Baptish are the finish people you could ever meet! And as far as pedophiles they are probaly in every job, thank heavens I know none for I would turn them in to police in a heartbeat. I also think that they can't be cured and should be put away forever. And to Shane I hope you do find god while in prison but you should spend the rest of your life there if you are guilty!

Pastors, ministers, and teachers of God's word are held to a higher standard by God. The judgment he faces here on Earth is nothing compared to what he faces after he leaves it! I am very glad he can no longer harm children!

Boy, it's a good thing that all the constant media generated hysteria, sex offenders list legislation, privacy destroying background checking websites, and making teachers afraid to hug first graders kept some kids from being diddled, isn't it?

This is not even shocking in a world gone mad. I have to say to parents, your teenagers may be able to care for themselves now, but they still need supervision from afar. Go put parental controls on the computer and move the computer to the most used room in the house (kitchen?). Teenagers need parental involvement they are not miniture adults. The church scandals are everywhere it seems. I had a dream one night that someone who taught in the childrens church was a preditor and I stopped attending that church. I figured I was better off safe than sorry. I've had people in church make comments from what I was wearing to the fact that was husbands music was not talented enough. Every now and then if you look hard enough you will find a tiny church filled with great people. I guess my point is even though its a church don't think of everyone in it as saints. If they were saints they would be next to God's thrown in heaven. The church is meant for sinners.
