LITTLE ROCK, AR - Tuesday night, the Little Rock Board of Directors decided to spend more than $230,000 of your tax dollars on keeping people fit and healthy.

The city will buy new gym equipment from Your Total Fitness Shop for three of the city's fitness centers.

Frank Newell works out at Little Rock's Jim Dailey Fitness and Aquatic Center several times a week. His favorite workout is 30 minutes on the treadmill.

He sometimes gets frustrated with the equipment.

"It works fine when it works. But it's always being maintained. So it's difficult to get on the treadmills at some times during the day," says Newell.

Tuesday, we caught up with Newell mid-workout to get his take on some of the older equipment.

"Would you be happy if the city spent $231,000 on new equipment?" asked Kelly Dudzik.

”I would be ecstatic if the city would spend some of my tax money getting some new equipment," Newell replied.

Tuesday night, Newell got his wish. The board of directors approved the upgrade.

"The price that the contractor quoted us includes the trade of the equipment that we currently have," says Little Rock Parks and Rec Department leader Truman Tolefree.

Newell looks forward to getting to use the new gear, especially once people give up on their resolutions and the gym clears out.

"We're fixin’ to burn through the New Year resolution people," he says.

There is no word yet on when the new equipment will be installed. It will also go to the Dunbar and Southwest Community Centers.

Two questions come to mind here. One. Why do you have to have a contractor to purchase and trade equipment when all they re goin to do is raise the price on you? Why can't the so called licensed experts that wrok there make a decision on what is needed and go out and buy it? This brings up my second question? Are enough people using the equipment and facility and actuly bringing down healthcare bills and cost? Are they actually getting healthy and cutting cost in all areas? Obviously no one in the Little Rock government ever gets out and actually looks at the state of disarray the city is in and obviously the Governor never rides and looks either. State is going down hill right along side the rest of the nation I had someone tell m they voted for Obama because him and his wife are cool and it's what the country needs. WHAT?

I was under the impression that the "tax" money was to be spent on fire and police departments. I'm sure that these things need to be done, but so does paying for more fire and police protection. What happen to the 3% raise the police officers didn't take to help the city before the "safety tax" passed? Why are we not hearing that part of their contact was upheld???

You know I'm not real big on crime. I'm not letting it disturb my life though. Scared. Get under your bed and hide. Just what the criminal wants. Or better yet. Exercise your right to move. The only problem is where would you go. I'm thinking not far enough away.

RODIEPOL: I wrote a post today on another article about there not being a DECENT neighborhood left in Little Rock....and that you couldn't take a walk anywhere anymore. Disgraceful. IMO we need a lot of armed responsible citizens. OR MAYBE BETTER...plenty of prison space to throw all the thugs into....then maybe they would not be so quick to wave their guns and terrorize neighborhoods. Not being able to take walks on our streets is terrible.

Well, People have to go to gyms these day becase it's not safe to walk the streets of Little Rock anymore or any surrounding area. We build bridges and parks that are not safe during the day or night. Our Country is in a sad state these days. I am tired of the raise in taxes! When the Jobs are leaving Arkansas faster than they come in..We have problems...Look at the Companys that have left Arkansas or have gone south or Disappeared all together.... Look at Arkansas as a whole when it comes to job loss.
