NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR - A North Little Rock man is in jail right now without bond accused of stabbing and killing his best friend as a sacrifice.
Tuesday, FOX16 talked with the brother of Sidney Rufus. Police found Sidney Rufus, 23, stabbed several times Monday night at his North Little Rock home. Police say the suspect confessed by telling them he killed to commit a sacrifice.
Devante Cooney, 19, now faces a first degree murder charge.
"The victim made a statement, apparently his mother passed away recently. From what we gathered, the victim made a statement that he wanted to see his mother, and that's why we thought the word sacrifice came in. We don't feel like that it's any type of religious sacrifice," says Sgt. Brian Dedrick with the North Little Rock Police Department.
Police found Rufus stabbed several times bleeding from his chest and back. Doctors could not save his life.
Tuesday, FOX16 talked with the brother of Sidney Rufus, who did not want to appear on camera, but shared his memories and pictures. He says Sidney played clarinet in the UAPB marching band, loved basketball and was a good kid.
Rufus' brother also says the two were best friends, and they really did not have any problems in the past.
Police officers remain thankful witnesses gave them the information they needed to make the arrest.
"We always encourage the public to call us and let us come intervene before it gets to something like this happening. Something tragic like this," says Dedrick.
Police also tell FOX16 that they do not know of any problems between the two men in the past.
