FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — A Siloam Springs man has been found guilty on 56 of 57 charges of mailing a white powder to a school, post office and businesses in northwest Arkansas.

U.S. Attorney Connor Eldridge says 57-year-old Philip Hanson was convicted Thursday by a federal jury in Fayetteville.

Hanson had pleaded not guilty. He represented himself at trial and did not call witnesses nor testify.

Hanson was charged with mailing the powder that turned out to be baking soda in October and November. Those receiving the letters included DaySpring Card Co., where Hanson worked for 28 years before being laid off in 2009.

Eldridge said Hanson faces five years in prison on each count for a total of up to 280 years. Eldridge said Hanson will be sentenced in six to eight weeks.

It's very clear to most of us that this man isn't the only one that is sick and needs help.

there was never no actual danger present he mailed baking soda. i do agree the man is sick and needs help. BUT a life sentence. only a cop (law enforcement), a military man our a wacko would agree with a life sentence. i like the way i tied law enforcement, military and wachos togerther.

Sounds like he wanted to go to jail, represented himself, no witnesses and did not testify.

This is the same as an act of terrorism, so yes, 5 years per count is fitting.
