LITTLE ROCK, AR -- A Little Rock man claims he bought a gun from a gun show, but he had no idea it was stolen. Now the man is will go to jail on a felony charge if he doesn't find the gun's receipt.
Kenneth Lee says Little Rock police pulled him over Friday for loud music and when they searched his car, they found his gun.
Lee does have a license to carry the gun. But when police ran the serial number, it came back stolen.
"I have never had this problem before," said Lee.
Lee says he bought the gun at a local gun show, paying $350 for it. However, he can't find the receipt.
"It had my name, the seller's name, and all of that," said Lee.
Without the receipt, police took him to jail on a theft by receiving charge, which could be upgraded.
"I am trying to find me a lawyer now. So I can get it all settled and done. I'm just trying to get it behind me," said Lee.
Jim Mitchell manages gun shows in Central Arkansas. He doesn't have any connection to Lee's case. But warns consumers to complete a bill of sale form to protect yourself.
"Its incumbent on both people, the buyer and the seller, to make sure to keep track of who they buy it from and who they sell it too," said Mitchell.
Lee is now warning other buyers.
"Be careful and save all your receipts. That's all that matters. As long as you got that receipt, you are okay."
