Maumelle is one step closer to having a special bond election this fall.

Now, with a revised list of taxpayer funded projects, the City has started prioritizing its needs.

The indoor pool, while wanted by many, is not a need. And, that’s why Monday night, a special committee did not put it on a list of priorities.

“I think the biggest misconception is that putting a pool in is a want. That’s it’s just something fun for recreation, that’s true. but there’s other added benefits,” says Karen Lameroux, an aquatics teacher.

A new indoor pool, to go along with Maumelle’s popular outdoor pool, dominated the first part of the bond committee hearing. Concerns rose when it came to having enough money to maintain it.

Ultimately, the committee decided a new pool is a want, not a need.

“As much as I want a pool, I don’t know if a pool is one we absolutely need based upon this committee meeting here today,” said Alderman Jamie Stell.

Even though the bond committee is made up entirely of city council members, in committee they had no authority to vote on whether to have the special election. That has to wait until the next council meeting.

They did, however, come up with a list of needs: two road projects on Crystal Hill and Counts Massie and a new fire station.
