SEARCY, Ark. (AP) — A man charged in the shooting death of his girlfriend in White County is seeking a mental evaluation.

The Daily Citizen reports that attorneys for Charles Berry filed a motion this week for a mental examination. Berry is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 41-year-old Donna Kennedy.

Berry's attorney, Ellen Rief, declined to comment.

Kennedy died April 20 from a gunshot wound and investigators say her death was reported as a suicide. White County authorities arrested Berry in July after medical examiners determined that Kennedy did not shoot herself.

Trial proceedings are on hold pending the results of the evaluation.
