The North Little Rock city council has to decide how to fill the seat of Ward Three alderman Cary Gaines. He
resigned Friday after a federal indictment implicated him in trying to rig the city's bidding process.
"I would suggest that a motion be made that we accept alderman Gaines letter of resignation and that we do file it as we normally do," Mayor Patrick Hayes said.
The North Little Rock city attorney's office tells FOX16 the city council will soon decide whether to hold a special election or appoint a new alderman to replace Gaines. While Gaines isn't named in the indictment and isn't charged with anything he did hint at possible future legal trouble in
his resignation letter. "During the days ahead, it appears it will be necessary for me to spend substantial time addressing the accusations that may well be formally made."
The
federal indictment claims a North Little Rock alderman conspired with George Thompson from Cabot to rig the bidding process for city sidewalk and landscaping projects.
Investigators took Thompson to a jail. He's now charged with having 147 illegal firearms, operating an illegal gambling business and cocaine possession.
