LITTLE ROCK, AR – The Little Rock Police Department released the names of the two detectives involved in Friday’s shooting and killing of a burglary suspect.
They are Todd Hurd, 44, a 21-year veteran of the LRPD, and Kenneth Blakenship, 53, a 28-year veteran of the LRPD. Police say Hurd shot Michael Daniel two times after police say Daniel tried to grab Blankenship’s gun during a struggle. Daniel was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hurd and Blankenship became involved when they were dispatched to robbery. Police say the detectives found the robbery at a duplex at 4521 West 16th Street. Police say the detectives watched a man load property from the home into a gray Toyota Camry driven by a second person.
The detectives followed the car when the drive stopped on Brown Street and the robbery suspects ran away. Blankenship gave chase. According to the police, Daniel feigned surrender. As Blankenship approached, weapon drawn, Daniel lunged at Blankenship.
Police say the two struggled, with Daniel trying to grab the gun, eventually ending up on the ground with Daniel on top of the detective. At that time Hurd shot Daniel twice, killing him.
The second suspect, Marcus Davis, was arrested by officers in the area. He is charged with capital murder, burglary, theft of property, and fleeing. He is being held at the Pulaski County jail on $500,000 bond, according to the jail’s website.
