Number of Lanes on Main St. to be Reduced

LITTLE ROCK, AR -- A vote on a plan to reduce the number of lanes on Main Street in Little Rock passed after drawing a big crowd to a city meeting Tuesday evening.

The idea behind the nearly half-million dollar project is to slow down traffic and make the street safer for walkers and bikers.

Under the project, Main Street from 6-30 south to Roosevelt Road would be trimmed from four to two lanes with a center turn lane.

City planners call the project a "road diet."

They say it would slow traffic, reduce accidents, improve pedestrian safety and make room for bicycles.

The city will pay just 10 percent of the $460,000 tab with the state picking up the rest.

Construction on the project is set to begin this fall.
