NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR - North Little Rock Police Officer Tommy Norman is the American Legion Department of Arkansas Law Enforcement Officer-of-the-Year. Norman received the award during a special Ceremony, Saturday, at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel. In addition, Officer Norman's name will be submitted to the American Legion National Headquarters as a nominee for the 2013 National Law Enforcement Officer-of-the-Year.

A patrol officer since 1998, Officer Norman is well-known in North Little Rock for his community service. Local children know him from the "Back-to-School" event where he distributes backpacks and sneakers to children in need, or as the lead officer for the Star Student Program at local schools. During the holidays, Officer Norman coordinates community programs such as "Shop With a Cop," which he established five (5) years ago, and the "Season of Giving," which he created 12 years ago. When Officer Norman is not patrolling, you can usually find him involved in volunteer work, as he raises money for the Special Olympics by participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run or with Krispy Krème's "Cops on Top" fundraiser.

Officer Norman’s supervisors say he builds "lasting relationships" with community residents and is a remarkable role model for children; however, the far-reaching word on the street about Officer Norman even compelled a murder suspect in a neighboring city in 2001 to find Officer Norman , who then facilitated his surrender to authorities.

The American Legion Department of Arkansas bestows its Law Enforcement Officer-of-the-Year Award to a well-rounded law enforcement officer who has exceeded the duty requirements expected of his or her position, and has demonstrated a distinct pattern of community service coupled with professional achievement.

Tired; I live just outside Jax; I've never had a problem with the law here, never had a problem with Pulaski County, and in the 22 years I've lived here ( not counting my years here going to elementary school in Monticello ), only one ticket from the State Police, and I deserved it; turning around at a tractor crossing between Sherwood and Jax. Tired; hate will only eat at you; if you be Christian, it is also against what Jesus would want of you. If one can't respect the law, and others, then they surely can't respect themselves. Try to look at the positive in this Officer's life, and what he's done for the community!

Tired; why so down on LEO's? I've said it before; I'll say it again. Those that have no respect for the law, no respect for others, the trash that seems to conintue growing, both in the cities, and out here in the country, of all races; you people need the police more than honest folk do. They keep the masses from saying "We've had enough, let's form militia's, and wipe them from the face of the earth". And yes, we greatly outnumber the criminal element, we are veterans with experience, we are hunters, we are smarter; and like I also stated in a former post, if society were to break down; and the food stamps run out, the inner cities grocery shelves became empty; the trash in the cities would head out here to steal, murder, and rape; and they would all wind up worm food. Maybe you don't belong in the group I call the criminal element; but those that do, believe you me, they NEED the police for thier own protection! And the American Legion is a good organization; if they picked Officer Norman as LEO of the year for Arkansas, then he must be a good man; did you read the story, and his accomplishments, and what he's done for the less fortunate? nuff said indeed!

bat102; Are you an LEO? I've been getting on the one's getting in trouble; but I've been supporting the rest of you against posters that don't seem to like LEO's at all; probaby because the posters that don't care for the police have had several problems with them. If you are, hat's off to you for risking your life for us honest folk everytime you go to work.
