Opening day preparations at Oaklawn

Fifty cent corn beef sandwiches, screaming fans and fast horses is an Arkansas tradition that is about to get under way.
Opening day at Oaklawn in Hot Springs is Friday. Before the doors will open, the track needs to be thawed out!

Record cold weather has Oaklawn working to thaw out a frozen track.  "We've got equipment on the track now, we're working to get ready for opening day and for a training this afternoon," said Assistant General Manager David Longinotti. "The track maintenance crew is probably not going to get a whole lot of sleep in the next couple of days."

Longinotti says the idea is to even out the dirt and let the sun thaw it out.

The first race begins at 1pm Friday.

During the four day opening weekend last year nearly 60,000 fans passed thru the turnstiles.  Many came for Oaklawn's signature 50 cent corned beef sandwiches.  This year the special will not be on opening day but on Saturday Instead.

The newly expanded gaming area will open on Friday at 10am and the racing gates will open at 11am.
Oaklawn’s  54 day live racing season continues thru April 10th.
