If you wait all year to put on your ice skates and glide across a fresh, frozen canvas to celebrate the holidays now you get your chance! The Arvest River Market on Ice is open for business in downtown Little Rock. And since it's Little Rock's first outdoor skating rink in years, the chilly winter wonderland got a very warm reception.

Skaters of all shapes and sizes explored the frozen phenomenon that popped up in the River Market this weekend.

"We would like to welcome everyone to River Market on ice," says Gretchen Hall with the City of Little Rock.

"You can learn to do tricks on ice and you can have fun on it," says skater Sarah Jenkins.

Some are no strangers to the slick surface, but others were clearly still developing their ice legs.

"It's something fun to try; everyone's willing to risk it. Take a fall you bounce back up,” says Hall.

The city of Little Rock partnered with Arvest Bank and others in the community to bring a professional ice rink company to town. This rink is Little Rock's first outdoor skating rink in more than a decade.

"I think this just adds to the holiday festivities throughout and around central arkansas. We've got a great mix of entertainment built in here in the River Market district but this outdoor ice rink is kind of a novelty to southerners,” says Hall.

Don’t worry about warm days taking away the fun; a 2-ton air conditioner will keep the $7,000 worth of frozen water nice and cold. And those with skating experience say there's something special about an outdoor rink.

"I’ve been skating for four years and it's amazing to have an outdoor rink. I’ve never skated in an outdoor rink before," says skater Sarah Jenkins.

"When I come here I can feel the outdoors and I can feel the wind and it's just amazing,” says skater Sarah Banko.

The rink is open until January 9th and the 8 dollar entry fee covers your skate rental.
