Unionized teachers in Pulaski County say they'll be back on the job Friday.  The decision comes after a one day work stoppage the Pulaski Association of Classroom Teachers, PACT, called a "fair treatment walkout."  It left PCSSD scrambling to cover the 690 teachers who didn't show up to work.

When you talk to any union teacher they'll tell you the walkout was not about the money but about their contract, which even after a 1-day demonstration isn't closer to being ratified.  About 100 union teachers in Pulaski County were out of the classroom and in full voice protesting Thursday morning.

There was tension early on about where teachers could protest. One group was told to leave district headquarters.  "Very disappointed because they are there for the children.  And we've given them what the association asked for, so why are they striking?" School Board member Mildred Tatum said.

Just down the road parents dropped their kids off.  Parent, Kawana Brown said she didn’t know this was going on and this was the first she had heard about it.  Other parents knew though; 1 in 3 Fuller Middle School Students didn't show to class, others left during the day.  And district wide 19% of the 17,860 students were absent Thursday.

While there was teaching going on in some classrooms, there just was not a lot of it at Fuller.  They normally have 42 teachers, Thursday they had just 8.

By mid-day, the 1-day walkout moved downtown where the Pulaski Association of Classroom Teachers met behind closed doors again.  Finally emerging two hours later, PACT President Marty Nix explained what happened in the meeting.   "Teachers are going back, we're going to continue to try to get our recognition back and continue to try and get that contract ratified."

Superintendent Rob McGill says he's happy teachers are back saying they have excellent teachers and they need them back in the classroom to educate because that's what they’re here for.

The district says 64% of its 1,360 teachers are in PACT, a majority of them in the middle and high school levels.  Teachers that participated in the walk-out say they took a paid day of leave.  But PCSSD says it plans to dock one day's pay from teachers who didn't show up Thursday.

What an absolute slap in the face. Can this slapstick comedy get any better. Mr. Clark is afraid that a 2% increase may put the district in fiscal distress, then next day gives it as if it were his idea, now we're throwing money into the face of subs, just to get a message across to us PACT members. How about giving us our recognition back, ratifying the contract and putting your emotions in check? We already have a Charlie Wood #1,we don't need a #2. Your basing your actions on rumors and trying to convince us to go on strike. No, your focus needs to be on doing the right thing. Parents want their kids in school, we want to be in school and power struggles aren't going to help anyone. The power trips need to stop. Our district's reputation can't take much more damage. I am proud to be a teacher, don't try to make me embarassed that it's in the PCSSD.

ssmom, I agree that it is the parents that should speak up for their children. Unfortunately I see all to manty parents who are not concerened with the situation that the school board is putting their children in. I speak up to the school board every chance that I get and I think it is sad that the money and resources are not being spread evenly over the district. Who says that one part of the district deserves more money then the other. It is one district and all members should be treated equally. If more parents were like yourself and I then the teachers would not have to worry about standing up for our children. Unfortunately though not enough parents are concerened and therefore I am glad that the teachers are willing to do it. I don't see many parents outside the district office for the students. I myself went out yesterday and supported the teachers because as of right now I don't see enough parents willing to do it.

I hope that, for the sake of the students in the PCSSD, the school board and union teachers can find a way to work out their differences. I have read over and over that teachers are tired of having to be a babysitter/parent to their students so I find it somewhat ironic that one of the issues for the union is to be a "voice" for the students. The fact is that both the union and school board tend to be quietly serving their own agendas while screaming "IT'S ALL ABOUT THE STUDENTS!". The mistake that both parties are making is assuming that the parents and citizens of Pulaski County are not paying attention. The issues at hand may very well be valid and should be addressed. Although, an argument could be made that there seems to be a certain amount of jealousy of the future Maumelle School and staff. Hmmm...??? When did PCSSD become a profit sharing corporation? Oh, its not. Well then, the amount of money the PCSSD spends on facilities should not be a concern for the union only the citizens of Pulaski County. Unions have an agreement on pay and benefits everything else is a community issue. Now, the case appears to be that the union has cried foul one too many times. As a parent I do not like being pushed into a corner when it comes to my child's education. The walkout was a aggressive threat toward the community, not just the school board, and we take offense. Since you got a raise and an increase in benefits, I will be the "voice" to my child, after all, I am the most qualified. I am the only person looking out for his/her real best interest. One thing that I think would be very helpful would be to have a board equally as powerful as the school board that only represents the students. That group would have and equal vote in any issue for the board. Problem solved.

My spouse is a teacher and never bucks the system, is always at every after school event regardless of the time or pay, goes to school before 7am and does not leave her classroom, often well 5pm. The dedication this teacher has is well beyond that of any professional. We use our money to buy the students materials, gifts, belts, ect. The hours spent grading papers each evening (including weekends) averages 4 hours. About another hour is spent writing individualized intervention lessons for each student who does not score above state test requirements (and there 12 of these students in a class of 20). Many of the students don't even have the aptitude to be in the grade their in but are passed to the next grade because of state/national law. My spouse was not planning on attended the event yesterday but did so only because the SB told them they did not have the right to take a personal accrued leave day (number of accumulated days my spouse has saved is over 70) and yet the SB elects to say they:(1st could not take a day of leave, 2nd their pay would be docked, and 3rd they would be fired). We used yesterday to find out what the situation was about and to learn what rights a teacher has, as well as to grade papers, and personal business. Clearly you can see what tactics/lies the SB is using in an attempt to intimidate these dedicated professionals. I am proud of my spouse and wished I had the dedication, love for the children that the job requires. Putting it frankly, I wouldn't put up with the crap the SB gives them. I truly resent the fact that parents, SB, and many of you readers for some reason have animosity toward these dedicated professionals as a whole. They did what they could to make you who you are, the rest was up to you. Lastly, the SB has not issued any statements reflecting why they won't recognize the voice these teachers. Nor has it stated why it did not ratify their contract as it stated it would.

Here are the reasons for the walkout yesterday -decertification of the union (this has multiple reasons) - Teachers at Oak Grove would not be allowed to work transfer to the new Maumelle High School when their school is closed - No voice for teachers - Teachers can no longer speak out for students rights - Students that have been wronged lose a voice - Money can be spent in anyway the board feels is necessary (meaining put into Maumelle) -ratificaton of the contract - This contains more of the teachers rights like floating teachers and number of different classes taught

The whole point of the teachers protesting is so that the district will HEAR them. When you take away a union, you take away that group's voice. Besides the fact that they are fighting to get their contract ratified, if the teachers' voices have been thrown aside like trash, who will be there to speak for the students? The teachers' union does not always stick up for a teachers' rights as it does on this occasion. For the most part, teachers ARE loyal to their students. For the most part, teachers try to speak out for their students because MOST of them care. Without the PCSSD recognizing their union they get crap and the students get the same.

If the issues are not about money, could someone please provide a simple list stating each complaint? I am having a hard time filtering through all of the post filled with emotional dialogue to see the true issues. I am truly curious and I am willing to look at the list objectively.

No it would not have been an issue but it is unlawful. I hope that any teachers who were coaches and got escorted out of their games bring lawsuits against the school board for TItle 9 offenses due to the fact that in the past teachers who have not been at school have still coached. Really if you think that today was not about the students but about pay then there really is no helping you. The teachers are NOT concerned with the money like the media and SB have made it out to be. They are concerned for the students and see many of the ill effects that could occur if PACT no longer has a voice. For instance the massive amount of money being put into Maumelle and moved away from the other schools. In my opinion it is time for the district to be broken down into smaller districts. There is entirely too much waste at the district office and the school board is incompetent. If the district was broken into about 5 smaller districts all of them would have better test scores and hopefully there would be no need for the union. As of now though the union is the only one who fights for the students because many times parents don't understand the issues which can be seen on this board.
